9 things you need to know about the Huawei P9

Huawei has unveiled the P9, its new flagship phone focused on the camera and a well-crafted metal design.

It features a Kirin 955 processor, 3000mAh battery, 32GB internal storage and 3GB of RAM. But there’s a lot more to the Huawei P9 than just that spec list.

Here’s everything you need to know about the latest phone from Huawei.

It has partnered with Leica

Huawei’s big focus is its new partnership with Leica, which co-engineered the phone. It’s all about that new camera technology on the back of the handset. Huawei CEO Richard Yu promised that “the phone brings the full Leica experience to a smartphone” but whether that’s true or not, we’ll have to wait and see.

Double cameras

On the back of the phone you’ll spot it has a dual camera. Each lens has a 12MP sensors, with larger pixel sizes than even before. In fact, they’re 24% larger than the ones on the Huawei P8.

Lots more light

Huawei P9

One sensor is RGB while the other is monochrome. The monochrome version offers 200% more light, meaning it can offer more light than the iPhone 6S and Galaxy S7. By combining the two images together it can also give even crisper detail.

Keeping the Full HD display

Even though the Nexus 6P jumped up to a 2K display, the Huawei Mate 8 kept the Full HD screen, and the P9 is going to follow suit. Huawei is keeping Full HD resolution on the 5.2-inch Huawei P9 screen but offers 423 pixels-per-inch, which is quite impressive.

There’s a bigger one too

Huawei P9

Huawei has also announced the P9 Plus alongside the P9 with a slightly bigger display and similar spec. It features a 5.5-inch display inside a larger body than the Huawei P9.

It’s got a tiny bezel

The Galaxy S7 has a 3.07mm bezel on each side of the screen, but still feels like it reaches close to the edge. The Huawei P9 is pushing that boundary and now has a 1.7mm bezel on each side of the display, but it’s not truly edge-to-edge like the Galaxy S7 Edge.

Same size as an iPhone 6S

Huawei highlighted that the P9 is the same size as the iPhone 6S, but offers an extra 0.5-inch of screen. That’s all down to the slimmer bezels

No gold or rose gold for the UK

Huawei P9

The Huawei P9 has launched in six colors around the world, but Europe is going to miss out on two of those. Those in the UK will only be able to buy the silver and grey versions of the phone, so sadly there’s no rose gold option. Color options for the US and Australia are currently unclear.

There’s a ceramic version too

Huawei has also produced what it’s calling a ceramic version of the P9 – it has a metal body with a ceramic overcoating. It takes 23 processes to get the finish on the top with five individual layers and the coating is only 0.1mm thin to keep the phone nice and sleek.

Sounds like a beast, regardless of SoC. Nowadays, the performance level is so close, that processors aren't the only determining factor anymore. I will be waiting for the review, and photos. I haven't personally had the LGG5 in hand yet, but from reviews, it sounds like a letdown. If huawei releases the source code(unlikely), this would be a good development phone.

Love my Huawei Honor X2 7.0 only issue I have with it is that it does not support 4G LTE in the states.
I would love to see Huawei make another 7" phablet that supports LTE here in the states.
