Aadhaar compliant with Samsung Galaxy Tab Iris with iris scanner and launched in India: Price, specifications, features

Samsung’s new ‘Made in India’ tablet boasts an iris scanner, but you won’t be able to buy it anytime soon.

Samsung has today launched a new tablet called the Galaxy Tab Iris. Priced at Rs 13,499, this tablet is not only ‘Made in India’, but it also boasts iris-recognition technology as well. The tablet features an iris scanner placed above the rear camera, which Samsung says is ready for Aadhaar authentication, which can lead to cashless and paperless transactions in sectors like banking and eGovernance.

Being Aadhar compliant, the Galaxy Tab Iris can pull up a user’s Aadhaar details by scanning his eyes. Samsung says that iris scanning is more accurate than a fingerprint scanner and this tablet will be usable in various government projects like Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), National Health Mission (NHM), eHospital program, and DigiLocker among others.

Along with the government sector, the Galaxy Tab Iris is also aimed at banks and enterprises that are adopting Aadhaar authentication. For those worried about privacy, the tablet is protected by Samsung Knox and the iris data is encrypted. With such usage in mind, Samsung says that the tablet won’t be available at retail stores anytime soon.

Samsung Galaxy Tab Iris specifications, features: The tablet features a 7-inch WSVGA (1024×600 pixels) display and is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor paired with 1.5GB of RAM. It also includes 8GB internal storage, which can be expanded up to 200GB using a microSD card.

The Galaxy Tab Iris also features a 5-megapixel auto-focus camera at the back, 3,600mAh battery, and connectivity options like 3G support, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1 and USB 2.0 port. On the software front, it runs on Android Lollipop.
