Meizu’s upcoming Pro 6 could be the second smartphone to launch this year with a whopping 6GB of RAM onboard.
After the launch of the Meizu Pro 5 last year, the Chinese company is reportedly gearing up to launch its successor this year. The highlight of this upcoming flagship smartphone, called Meizu Pro 6, is the 6GB of RAM onboard. If true, this would be the second smartphone after the recently launched Vivo XPlay 5 to boast 6GB of RAM.
Meizu is said to be launching two versions of its flagship smartphone, differentiated by the amount of RAM onboard, GizmoChina reports. The high-end version will boast 6GB of RAM along with 128GB internal storage, while the cheaper variant will boast 4GB of RAM along with 64GB internal storage.
While 6GB of RAM onboard does sound great for marketing purposes, and will no doubt help in the specifications race. But it still raises the question, do we really need 6GB of RAM, and does higher amount of RAM guarantee better performance? It is worth pointing out that most of the computers these days come with three or 4GB of RAM, and only those who need high-level of performance opt for six or 8GB of RAM.
It remains to be seen how Vivo is making use of 6GB of RAM on the XPlay 5, and it is a similar case with Meizu as well. That said, Samsung is already ready to manufacture 6GB of LPDDR4 RAM, and reports claim that it will be integrated into the Galaxy Note 6 launching later this year.
The Meizu Pro 6 has been on the rumor mills for quite some time now. Similar to the Pro 5, the Pro 6 too is expected to be powered by Samsung’s Exynos processor. Reports say it is likely to be the Exynos 8870 chipset, which is less powerful than the Exynos 8890 chipset seen on the Samsung Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge smartphones.
Another talking point on the Meizu Pro 6 is expected to be an Apple 3D-Touch-like display. Android smartphones like Gionee S8, Huawei Mate S and ZTE Axon Mini have already adopted the pressure-sensitive display, which can differentiate between a tap, touch and a long press. Details about other specifications and features are non-existent at the moment.
