AMD Threadripper: Release date, prices and cheaper model announced

AMD has released new details – including an actual release date – for its flagship series of Threadripper processors.

Unveiled back in May, Threadripper is the name for a new top-end range of CPUs built by AMD that are set to launch later this year. They’re intended as direct competition to Intel’s new Skylake-X series of processors, and now we finally know when they’re launching.

According to AMD, both the 12-core and 16-core Ryzen Threadripper processor variants – both of which had already been announced – will be available from August 10, and are already up for pre-order.

But AMD has also announced a new 8-core variant of the Threadripper design, which will be launching later on August 31 this year. It appears that this model is not yet available for pre-order.

Here’s a quick breakdown of specs and pricing:

  • Threadripper 1950X: 16-core, 32-thread | 3.4GHz base, 4.0GHz boost – $999
  • Threadripper 1920X: 12-core, 24-thread | 3.5GHz base, 4.0GHz boost – $799
  • Threadripper 1900X: 8-core, 16-thread | 3.8GHz base, 4.0GHz boost – $549

AMD says that all Ryzen Threadripper processors will be supported by a full ecosystem of X399 platforms at launch, and that motherboard designs are already available from brands like Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, and ASRock.

The Threadripper series of processors are part of the overarching AMD Ryzen brand, which was announced in December last year and makes use of the Zen CPU microarchitecture.

Zen chips – which we first saw used in Ryzen processors in February this year – are based on a system-on-a-chip design and utilise a 14nm manufacturing process, which means they’re relatively energy efficient and are capable of executing more instructions-per-cycle than the old Bulldozer architecture.
