If you’re planning to use your Apple iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus in rains or under water, think twice before doing so.
The Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are finally official. Better cameras, more storage, dual cameras on the iPhone 7 Plus and the shiny new Jet Black color variant has left a lot of users drooling and wanting to upgrade to the new iPhones. The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are also the first smartphones from Apple to officially boast water resistance feature. With IP67 certification for water and dust resistance, one can submerge the new iPhones under one meter of water for up to 30 minutes. However, there’s a big caveat.
According to Apple, the certification makes the new iPhones splash and dust resistant. You don’t have to worry about accidental splash in a bar or walking in the rain. However, if you read the fine print on specifications page of iPhone 7, the Apple warranty doesn’t cover liquid damage. “iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are splash, water, and dust resistant and were tested under controlled laboratory conditions with a rating of IP67 under IEC standard 60529. Splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and resistance might decrease as a result of normal wear. Do not attempt to charge a wet iPhone; refer to the user guide for cleaning and drying instructions. Liquid damage not covered under warranty,” the fine print on Apple page says. So, while the new iPhones are water and dust resistant, we’d recommend you to keep the smartphones away from water.
Despite having the required certification, Apple isn’t the first company to deny covering liquid damage under warranty. One of the highlights of Sony’s Xperia Z-series flagship smartphones have been waterproofing. But, it only worked with the flaps in place that worked as a sealant to restrict water from entering through the ports. However, after launching the Xperia Z5-series smartphones, the company mentioned that it won’t cover devices under warranty if found fully submerged in water. Even Samsung doesn’t cover “exposure to liquid, moisture, dampness, sand or dirt” for the water resistant Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge.
Apple iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus specifications
The iPhone 7 features a 4.7-inch HD display, whereas the iPhone 7 Plus features a full HD display. Apple has also worked on the display, which is 25 percent brighter than the iPhone 6s, and comes with new wide color gamut to deliver vibrant, cinema standard colors. Under the hood, both smartphones are powered by Apple’s A10 Fusion chipset with M10 Motion co-processor. Benchmark tests have revealed that the iPhone 7 boasts 3GB of RAM, but as usual Apple hasn’t mentioned anything about it. Both the new iPhones come with 32GB, 128GB and 256GB onboard storage.
In the camera department, the iPhone 7 comes with 12-megapixel rear camera of aperture f/1.8 and OIS, whereas the iPhone 7 Plus comes with dual camera setup (12-megapixel wide-angle lens and 12-megapixel telephoto lens). It features 2X optical zoom and 10X digital zoom, along with DSLR-like live bokeh effect, which will be enabled via a software update later. Both smartphones also come with 7-megapixel FaceTime HD cameras.
Apple has also done away with the 3.5mm audio port and us using Lightning connector and Bluetooth for audio output. The company has also bundled Lightning connector based EarPods and a Lighting to 3.5mm adapter with every iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. On the connectivity front, both iPhones feature Bluetooth, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, 4G LTE with VoLTE voice calling support and GPS. Running on iOS 10, the smartphones will go on sale in India starting October 7, with prices starting from Rs 60,000.
