Apple iPhone 7 waterproof tests pit it against fizzy drinks, hot coffee, and the ocean

Apple’s new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are water resistant. Not surprisingly, waterproof test videos have surfaced online showing how good the new iPhones are against the liquid element.

With people now getting their hands on Apple’s new iPhones, videos of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus being put through a number of torture tests are on a rise. We have already seen the iPhone 7 put through a particularly brutal scratch and bend test, and now it’s time for videos that put the new iPhones’ water-resistant capabilities to the test.

Before we move on to the videos, let’s just clear one thing — the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus smartphones are not waterproof. They are merely water-resistant, or in other words, they will be able to survive an accidental dunk in water or a sudden downpour as well. Apple says that the new iPhones are IP67 certified, which makes them resistant to dust and water. This certification allows one to dunk the new iPhones in up to one meter of water safely for up to 30 minutes without causing it any damage. Though we would strongly advise you to not put this feature to test at home, since liquid damage is still not covered under the phone’s warranty. With that out of the way, let’s look at some of the iPhone 7 water tests that have recently surfaced online.

The first video by infohut shows the iPhone 7 being dunked into a glass of a fizzy drink as well as a hot coffee. Surprise surprise, the new iPhone is undamaged. The tester then takes the iPhone apart towards the end of the video to show how there is no water residue on the internal components since no liquid percolated inside.

Now most smartphones with water resistant capabilities may be able to withstand a dunk in the toilet, bathtub or a pool, but not in the sea. The saline water can cause havoc to a device’s internal components. The following video shows the iPhone 7 being dunked in the sea, and it survives, as no water seems to have percolated inside.

Apple doesn’t suggest you take the iPhones with your when bathing or swimming in a pool, and it also doesn’t recommend using the phone for underwater photography. But tests prove that you will be able to click photos underwater. Now the screen won’t work underwater, but the trick is to start the camera before dunking the phone in water and then use the volume buttons to click photos. We would again suggest you don’t try this at home (or the pool).

Apple’s website guides you on what to do when the new iPhones come in contact with water. For one, it recommends you don’t take the phones with you for a bath, swim or sauna. In case the phone does get wet you should wipe it clean with a dry piece of cloth, and not to connect it to any charging points for at least five hours or so.
