Apple iPhone SE: Phil Schiller confirms what the ‘SE’ stands for

Apple has confirmed that the ‘SE’ in the new iPhone SE stands for ‘Special Edition’.

Apple may have launched the new iPhone SE last night, but there’s one thing that was left to everyone’s imagination — what does the ‘SE’ in the name stand for. Apple‘s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, Phil Schiller, has revealed what the SE stands for to journalist Jason Cipriani. As you might have guessed by now, the SE indeed stands for “Special Edition.”

The Special Edition in the name is in line with earlier reports. The number 5 is believed to have been dropped to avoid any confusion, since the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s are already on sale. Considering the iPhone SE has the most of the hardware of the iPhone 6s, giving it an iPhone 5 tag would have given an impression that it was a refresh of the nearly three-year-old phone. This also happens to be the first time since the original iPhone, when Apple has launched a new iPhone without a numerical in the name.

The new iPhone SE is essentially the iPhone 6s fit into the body of the iPhone 5s. The overall design is also nearly identical to the iPhone 5s, except for the matte finish. The new iPhone also gets the Rose Gold color option, which was introduced last year on the iPhone 6s.

The Apple iPhone SE is set to go on sale in India sometime in early April, and will be available in two storage variants — 16GB and 64GB. The 16GB variant is priced at Rs 39,000, but the price for the 64GB variant hasn’t been revealed yet.

Apple iPhone SE specifications, features: The new iPhone features a 4-inch Retina Display, and is powered by an A9 processor paired with M9 co-processor. It also features a 12-megapixel iSight camera, 1.2-megapixel FaceTime camera, and connectivity options like 4G with VoLTE support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC. On the software front, it runs on iOS 9.3 out-of-the-box.
