Apple iPhone SE vs iPhone 6s: The iPhone SE is a no-compromise flagship iPhone

Apple has finally unveiled the compact iPhone SE with a 4-inch retina display, which comes with the latest hardware on board. We compared it with the Apple iPhone 6s to see how it stacks up. Surprisingly, the iPhone SE has a better battery while retaining most of iPhone 6s specifications.

Last night, Apple finally announced the long-rumored 4-inch iPhone SE at a special launch event held in its headquarters in Cupertino. The Apple iPhone SE, where SE stands for ‘Special Edition,’ is essentially an upgrade over the iPhone 5s, which was launched back in 2013. In 2014, Apple introduced two phones, the iPhone 6 with a 4.7-inch HD display and the iPhone 6 Plus with a 5.5-inch full HD display to catch up with the large screen smartphone trend. However, users who prefer a compact smartphone were left out with the Apple iPhone 5s, and this is where the iPhone SE comes as an upgrade for those users.

For the iPhone SE, Apple has retained the form factor and the design of the iPhone 5s. One small change on the outside is the matte finish to offer a better grip, whereas the rest of the changes are under the hood. We would like to point out that despite the compact form, Apple has equipped the iPhone SE with the same hardware that goes in its latest flagship smartphone, the iPhone 6s – minus the pressure sensitive 3D Touch display, a lower-resolution FaceTime camera but better battery performance. Now, let’s take a look at how the iPhone SE compares with the Apple iPhone 6s.

Price: Soon after the official announcement, the company mentioned that it will be bringing the smartphone to the Indian shores in early April, with prices starting at Rs 39,000 for the 16GB storage variant. On the other hand, the iPhone 6s which officially made its way to India in October 2015, is now priced at Rs 40,499, Rs 49,999 and Rs 61,899, for 16GB, 64GB and 128GB variants respectively. We would like to highlight that the current price of Rs 40,499 for the 16GB base variant is almost Rs 21,500 down compared to the launch price of Rs 62,000, same goes with other storage variants too.

Specifications and features: The new iPhone SE sports a 4-inch Retina Display running at a resolution of 1136×640 pixels with pixel density of 326ppi, whereas the iPhone 6s is equipped with a slightly larger 4.7-inch HD Retina Display running at a slightly higher resolution of 1334×750 pixels and the same pixel density of 326ppi. While the iPhone 6s comes with the pressure sensitive 3D Touch display, the same technology is missing on the new iPhone SE.

Under the hood, both smartphones come equipped with Apple’s 64-bit A9 processor and M9 motion coprocessor, along with support for ‘Always On’ Hey Siri voice activation. While the iPhone 6s comes with 2GB of RAM, there is no word about the amount of RAM on the iPhone SE. According to a leaked Antutu benchmark, it seems the iPhone SE also has 2GB of RAM. In terms of storage, the iPhone SE will be offered in 16GB and 64GB storage variants, whereas the iPhone 6s is available in 16GB, 64GB and 128GB storage variants.

Camera is one department where Apple focuses during the Keynote speeches, and the iPhone SE is no different. Both smartphones come equipped with a 12-megapixel rear camera of aperture f/2.2 with size of 1.22 micron pixels. The camera comes with support for 4K video recording at 30fps, 1080p at 60fps, and slow motion video recording 1080p at 120fps and 720p at 240fps. It also comes with dual LED True Tone flash to help you take good photos in low-light conditions. TL;DR, both devices have the same iSight camera.

There is however, a big difference in the FaceTime camera. While the iPhone 6s comes equipped with a 5-megapixel camera of aperture f/2.2, the iPhone SE comes with a lower resolution 1.2-megpaixel HD FaceTime camera of aperture f/2.4. The front camera comes with a Retina Flash, which lights up the screen to full brightness, letting you take decent low-light photos.

Coming to battery life, as usual, Apple hasn’t mentioned the battery capacity of the iPhone SE, but it claims to offer better backup compared to the iPhone 6s. As per Apple battery rating, the iPhone SE can offer a talktime of 14 hours on 3G, internet use of up to 13 hours on LTE, HD video playback of 13 hours and audio playback of up to 50 hours. On the other hand, the iPhone 6s battery is rated to offer up to 10 hours of internet use on LTE, up to 11 hours on HD video playback and up to 50 hours.

On the connectivity front, both smartphones feature Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth, NFC, GPS and VoLTE connectivity options. For security, Touch ID fingerprint scanner is also present on both smartphones. While the iPhone SE comes shipped with iOS 9.3 out of the box, the update for iPhone 6s is now available to download.
