Apple quietly discontinues 3rd generation Apple TV, to focus on a new 4K model

It is highly likely that after Google’s Chromecast Ultra launch, Apple too introduces a new Apple TV that comes with 4K support. Recently, an FCC filing pointed to a wireless device with Bluetooth and NFC connectivity, which could possibly be the next-generation Apple TV.

Following the launch of its next-gen iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, and upgraded Watch and Watch 2 series in September, Apple is doing away with the older generation products for good. The Cupertino, California-based tech giant is reportedly phasing out its third-gen Apple TV in order to focus on its new fourth-generation model. According to a report, the company has quietly pulled out the listing of its third-generation Apple TV from its online store and rerouting the clicks to its fourth-gen successor.

The third-generation Apple TV was introduced in 2012. The device came with an improved video output and overhauled interface. The third-in-line featured a single-core A5 chip and allowed 1080p video output, while the remote, and inability to stream from non-Apple content providers. It was given the last software update with security fixes in February. Since then, the company shifted its focus entirely on the fourth-generation model that runs the tvOS which was specifically designed for the successor. With the silent killing of its older model, it is highly possible that the company is gearing up for a new version. Speculations are rife about a new Apple TV in-the-making with media reports pointing to Apple’s FCC filing for a wireless device with Bluetooth and NFC connectivity that could possibly become the successor to the existing fourth-generation Apple TV. With Google’s introduction of the Chromecast Ultra, it is understandable that Apple too pulls up its socks for a new model that supports 4K video.

As is the tradition with Apple, it quietly removes products from its lineup after they reach their expiry date. According to 9to5mac.com, in an email sent out to employees and education partners, Apple said that it is was discontinuing the third-generation device.

“The third-gen model was introduced in 2012 and was quietly updated a year later. Since then, Apple has shifted its focus to the tvOS-powered fourth-gen Apple TV,” the report said.

Apple, however, said it will fulfil order backlog for the device.

The company is currently selling refurbished models of third-gen Apple TV for $59. Once the refurbished models disappear, “Apple will seemingly have stopped sales of the third-gen Apple TV all together,” the report added.

It is also not clear if third-gen Apple TV will receive any additional software updates.

According to Apple website, every Apple TV comes with complimentary telephone technical support within 90 days of its purchase. In addition, Apple TV and all accessories are covered against defects for one year from the original purchase date by a limited hardware warranty.
