Confused as to which GoPro to choose? Here’s our comprehensive guide on the best GoPro cameras you can buy in 2018

The advent of the action camera has changed the way we see the world. Without the likes of GoPro and others, we’d never be able to show off those insane skiing tricks or laugh at others getting them wrong. So, if you like the idea of a teeny, tiny action camera that can handle all the thrills and spills you can throw at it, but you aren’t sure which of the many GoPro models is right for you, we’re here to lend a helping hand.

Whether it’s that adrenaline-pumping skydiving footage, crazy kayaking video or snowboarding antics, the world is a better place thanks to GoPro. The small and rugged little devices pack a punch, offering fantastic quality video and audio – for a reasonably inexpensive price.

GoPros bring the ability to film extreme sports or document everyday life to amateur filmmakers everywhere, but there are so many to choose from. That’s where we come in. Here’s our comprehensive list of the best GoPro cameras you can buy right now, and which will best serve your needs. Be sure to also check out our list of the best GoPro accessories on page two.

Which is the best GoPro for me?

No matter how much detail this list goes into, it will never be able to definitively answer which GoPro is the right one for you. That is, unfortunately, something you’ll have to figure out for yourself.

One simple test is that the Hero is generally a little underspecified for most users, while the Hero 7 Black is likely to be far more over-spec for many. The Hero 5 Black and the 2018 Hero are great all-rounders, but if you’re after something more professional – say if you run a YouTube channel or partake in extreme sports – you may benefit from something a bit more heavyweight.

By reading our guide, you should be able to quickly work out which is the best GoPro device for you.

Best GoPro cameras 2018

1. GoPro Hero 7 Black

  • Price: £379

The Hero 7 Black is not only the best GoPro, but also the best action camera there has ever been. Unlike any other GoPro there has been before it, the Hero 7 Black has HyperSmooth technology built-in, which is the most advanced stabilisation method we’ve seen on an action camera. It’ll replace the need of a gimbal for non-professional filmmakers.

That’s not all, GoPro has upped the ante on its camera lens by including HDR photography and the company has even revisited its user interface to better the experience on the camera’s 2in touchscreen. In a nutshell, if you’re in the market for the best action camera (or GoPro), get the Hero 7 Black.

2. GoPro Hero 5 Black

  • Price: £339

SONY DSC

You might be wondering why the Hero 5 Black is ahead of the Hero 6 Black (below). It’s rather simple: the Hero 5 Black provides better value for money and, despite not supporting up to 4K 60fps, it can record up to 4K 30fps and even supports RAW output. It has waterproofing capabilities, good audio recording quality and, for its price, it’s the best bang-for-buck, high-performing GoPro.

3. GoPro Hero 6 Black

  • Price: £425

GoPro’s Hero 6 Black doesn’t reinvent the wheel when it comes to action cameras, but adds a much-needed feature to its lineup: 4K video recording at 60fps. Other action cameras, such as the Yi 4K+, have already started doing this (and for cheaper), but this is GoPro’s first foray into silky smooth Ultra HD video. And the differences pretty much end there.

Its dinky rubberised body is exactly the same as the Hero 5 Black (above), with the same touchscreen on the back and waterproofing up to a depth of 10m without a case. 2.7K recording can now be shot at 120fps, while Full HD footage can be shot at 240fps. Get the GoPro Hero 6 Black if you’ve been looking for higher frame rates, but get the GoPro Hero 5 if you’re not fussed about 4K 60fps.

4. GoPro Hero 5 Session

  • Price: £249

SONY DSC

GoPro’s previous generation Session was an impressive little action camera. Keeping things basic, the Hero 5 Session is no different, offering a bare-bones experience, but still retaining that impressive GoPro video and image quality. There are a few recording and frame rate restrictions compared to its more expensive siblings (above), though, and obviously the lack of a rear touchscreen.

If you’re the kind of person who wants something light with a little footprint, this is the GoPro for you. Adding 4K 30fps video quality and wind-noise reduction, it’s a great action camera to pop on the car hood and start recording your journeys.

5. GoPro Hero (2018)

  • Price: £200

The 2018 GoPro Hero is capable of capturing up to 1440p at 60fps. Photos are great as its 10-megapixel sensor will capture your snaps with plenty of detail and colour. It also has built-in Wi-Fi connectivity and a 2in touchscreen display.

Much like the Hero 5 and 6 Black models, the 2018 Hero can be submerged to a depth of 10m without the need of external casing – a great addition for those who might accidentally drop the camera in a pool or those wanting to take underwater videos.
