Terrific design Surprisingly good speakers Runs sluggish at times Expensive

If you want a real bombshell of a laptop, look no further than the extremely slender MacBook. It’s come a long way from the days of being the MacBook Pro’s rounded, plastic underling. Apple reintroduced the MacBook as one of the world’s thinnest and lightest laptops featuring a razor sharp aluminum unibody design and high-resolution Retina display, which still hasn’t made its way into the MacBook Air. The nigh travel-less keyboard takes a little getting used and you can forget about using ports without an adapter. But if you can get over these humps, it’s a machine that turns heads and makes your friends jealous.

The HP Spectre x360 comes easily as one of our most recommended 2-in-1 hybrid laptops. It’s one of the best looking and most powerful hybrid notebooks out today, and the vibrantly bright display doesn’t hurt either. Although it weighs nearly as much as a 13-inch MacBook Pro Retina, its dimensions put it more in line with a MacBook Air and the fully metal body is a nice touch too, even if it ends up making it a tad bit too heavy for prolonged tablet use. Users who want even more power and the best screen possible should look to the new Skylake model with an OLED screen.

With a 14-inch screen, this HP Chromebook isn’t the smallest or lightest Chrome OS device out there. However, it strikes a good balance between ample screen space and portability. A top-notch keyboard and trackpad, coupled with a great screen, makes the Chromebook 14 a joy to write and browse the web on for very little money at all.

15. Lenovo LaVie Z

This skinny kid can fight

CPU: 2.40GHz Intel Core i7-5500U | Graphics: Intel HD Graphic 5500 | RAM: 8GB | Screen: 13.3-inch WQHD (2560 x 1440) LED anti-glare | Storage: 256GB

Core i7 processor Excellent high-res display Mediocre battery life Astronomical battery life

A laptop as light as a tablet? It’s not as crazy as you think with the Lenovo LaVie Z weighing less than two pounds. Aside from its lightweight chassis, the Lavie Z offers better performance and a higher resolution screen than most of its 13-inch Ultrabook competitors. Still, this machine has a few unfavorable characteristics including a squishy build quality, inferior battery life and inflated price tag; major turn offs for what is an otherwise splendid device.

$1200 for a laptop with a 1.1GHz dual-core Intel Core M? Apple has outdone themselves. Ok, so Apple fanboys say that Macs are better for Photoshop, and other media editing, but what kind of media are you going to use this shit for? MIDI?

Better check that statement Tom White – I have an 8yr old Asus laptop with a dedicated Nvidia 840M card, my 5yr old Asus N71jq has a Radeon HD5730 with 1GB DDR3 dedicated card…So, might be worth having a quick google before making such sweeping and incorrect statements especially in a tech forum…

The only laptop bigger than 13" (never mind 15" or more) on this list is a Chromebook.

Some of us, believe it or not, need to do actual work with a laptop and don't appreciate having to squint at a 13" screen.

This article is showing ultrabooks and low end machines and nothing else… I don't see a single high performance laptop here, or why every laptop is recommended.

What's the point of this actual list? EVERY SINGLE MACHINE IN THIS LIST has a CPU worse than the weakest desktop core i3 CPU you can buy today. None of these are good for anything more than basic browsing and maybe seven year old gaming.

But you didn't mention that this was a list for basic needs laptops. In fact you mentioned the opposite. I think this article needs an overhaul.

this review is a freaking joke, no offense. the review barely talks about the actual hardware rather than the looks and general purposes, may as well throw phone in there or galaxy note.

ALL of these laptop uses soldered cpu and graphics if they come with discrete graphics which means if 1 part breaks, ANY part on the motherboard, entire thing would need to be replaced means CPU and graphics too, super expensive.

not to mention these hardware used are all junk and still charge a premium, what a joke.
