Design of the the iPhone SE is clearly inspired from the iPhone 5s, but how its innards are different from the three year old model, and what has changed? The latest iFixit teardown of the iPhone SE answers these questions.
iFixit has conducted a teardown of Apple’s iPhone SE revealing interesting tidbits about the innards of the smartphone. According to iFixit, the iPhone SE is very similar to the three-year old the iPhone 5s. In fact, the iFixit team successfully installed iPhone 5s display panel on the iPhone SE. It also found the elements such as Touch ID loudspeaker, SIM card slot and vibration motor of the iPhone SE are interchangeable with the iPhone 5s’.
There are also a few changes in the latest iPhone. The iPhone SE has 2 GB LPDDR4 RAM while the iPhone 5s was powered by 1 GB LPDDR3 RAM. The battery size has been increased from 1,560mAh to 1,624mAh. The battery connector on the iPhone SE is different from the 5s.The iFixit team also points out the obvious change in the camera department. While it is a major upgrade from the 8-megapixel iSight camera on the iPhone 5s, the 12-megapixel iSight camera on the iPhone SE has similar module to the iPhone 6s’, but looks to be slightly tweaked.
Other subtle changes include a tweaked Lightning connector assembly which has silicon seals logic board connections that was first launched with the iPhone 6. The iFixit team also notes that the A9 SoC and an NXP 66V10 module for NFC payments are among the biggest logic board additions.
The iPhone SE has scored 6 out of 10 (10 is easiest to repair) on iFixit’s repairability scale. According to iFixit, the display assembly is easy to replace whereas battery can be easily accessed. Also, the Touch ID cable can be easily separated from the socket, but the device uses Pentalobe screws on the exterior, which iFixit says makes it it difficult to open. Pentalobe screw is a five-pointed tamper-resistant system mainly used by Apple in its devices since 2009.
iFixit’s teardown comes shortly after Chipworks conducted its own teardown of the iPhone SE. The teardown also points out big similarities between the iPhone SE and iPhone 5s. A few similarities include Broadcom BCM5976 and Texas Instruments 343S0645 that were used back in the iPhone 5s and changes such as Skyworks SKY77611 power amplifier module, a Texas Instruments 338S00170 power management IC, the Toshiba THGBX5G7D2KLDXG NAND flash, and an EPCOS D5255 antenna switch module.
