DJI Drops Jaws with Seriously Powerful Phantom 4 Pro and Inspire 2 Drones

Apparently, total domination isn’t quite good enough for DJI. It’s not enough that the Mavic has received rave reviews, beating the GoPro Karma so badly they started falling out of the sky in embarrassment. Today, DJI revealed two new drones that practically have aerial filmmakers wetting themselves.

Introducing the Phantom 4 Pro, and the Inspire 2: best-in-class drones worthy of a few dropped jaws and a very confidently dropped mic.

“Professional filmmakers and photographers always push to create images that have never been seen before, and DJI never stops trying to give them the tools to achieve their vision,” DJI CEO and Founder Frank Wang said in a statement. “Our newest flight platforms and stabilized aerial cameras are smarter, faster and more powerful than ever before.”

Let’s take them one at a time, starting with the weaker (very relatively speaking) of the two.

DJI Phantom 4 Pro

DJI is calling the Phantom 4 Pro the “smartest and most creative flying camera of its size.” Translation: we added a bunch of new collision avoidance sensors, a better camera, and a slightly bigger battery to the Phantom 4.

The Phantom 4 was already a capable drone for UAV beginners wanting to capture some cool footage or aerial photography, and the Pro makes it that much easier by adding a pair of stereoscopic sensors on the back of the drone (the Phantom 4 only had them on the front) and an IR sensor on either side. They’ve also improved the battery to squeeze 30 minutes of flight time out of the new drone.

Add to that the new 1-inch 20-megapixel CMOS sensor that boasts 12 stops of dynamic range and the ability to capture 4K video at up to 60fps, a mechanical shutter, and f/2.8 aperture, and you’re starting to get why photographers will love this drone.

Here are a couple of videos introducing you to the drone and the camera, courtesy of DJI:

In addition to the internal updates, DJI is also releasing a new remote control to go with the Phantom 4 Pro. The controller has GPS, a compass, a microSD slot and an HDMI port built in, and comes with an optional “high luminance display” that DJI claims “provid[es] a clear and vivid live HD view from the main camera as well as essential telemetry data, even in direct sunlight.”

You can learn more about the Phantom 4 Pro on the DJI website, where you’ll also find links for pre-order. The Phantom 4 Pro by itself will cost you $1,500, while the Pro plus the new remote control retails for $1,800.

Both configurations will ship in one week.

DJI Inspire 2

Okay, on to the big kahuna. The new Inspire 2 is a professional filmmaking and photography drone through and through. Faster, more powerful, more agile … more everything than its predecessor. People are already freaking out over this drone’s specs, and it was only announced a couple of hours ago.

It’s fast: boasting a top speed of 67mph, acceleration that brings the drone up to 50mph in just 4 seconds, and a climb rate of 7m/sec.

It’s more versatile: featuring a new dual-battery design that gets you up to 27 minutes of flight time, sensors on top of the drone to avoid overhead obstacles, and a dedicated first person view camera that lets the pilot see where she’s going without taking the main camera off the subject.

And it’s a much more powerful filmmaking and photography tool: capable of using either the Micro Four Thirds 20.8MP Zenmuse X5S, or the 1-inch sensor 20MP Zenmuse X4S to capture 5.2K video at 30fps and an insane 4.2 Gbps and piping it directly into an onboard SSD because no microSD card could possibly keep up.

Here are a few videos that’ll help you get up to speed on this monster of a drone, including a short film shot entirely on the Inspire 2:

As with the Phantom 4 Pro, you can learn more about and already pre-order the Inspire 2 over on the DJI website. The Inspire 2 aircraft by itself runs $3,000, or you can buy the Inspire 2 Combo—which includes an Inspire 2 drone, Zenmuse X5S camera, and CinemaDNG and Apple ProRes License Keys—for $6,200.

The combo will ship in early December, but if you purchase the camera and drone separately, expect to wait until January.

too bad that DJI support still sucks.
and when you lost one of the 3000$ drones because of software issues you will think different about DJI as a company. flay away.. goodbye…..

All fine and dandy but when is the Mavic released?

  3. Reply Pardal Linho November 16, 2016 at 11:51 am

This is all great and dandy but DJI is not shipping products and keeping customers money for months without acceptably explanation, proper business practice or timely refund. I have had a Mavic Pro on order for almost 2 months, my credit card charged instantly, I still haven’t received it and now the ETA is another 2 months. This is the reality of this company..

      +1

DJI is a shady company with practically no support.

      • Reply Pardal Linho November 16, 2016 at 11:51 am

I really dont know if they are shady.. I think most Chinese companies are a bit “shady”in their business practices, to put it mildly. However I have seen some DJI products in person and the quality is really good. And maybe specifically the Mavic Pro is in very high demand and they can only make so many while keeping the quality control. All this I can understand. I just CANT understand they push back the delivery (to me at least ) 3 times already while NEVER refunding me or offering some sort of a minimum compensation..whether is a discount or an extra battery or whatever. Keeping my money for 4 months BEFORE shipment as it seems will be the case is a bit too much, even for me that am usually a very patient and accommodating person.. I just dont think this is right. By the way, all justice said, I CAN cancel the order.. this option has always been available and they make no fuss about it. But of course Ill be at the end of the queue should I decide again later to get the drone..

Wonderful news that the the camera spec is going in the right direction.
If they’d included even a modest zoom on the P4 Pro they’d have a sale here !
C’mon guys, how hard can that be!

  5. Reply Oliver November 16, 2016 at 11:51 am

The P4 Pro has H265 at 100mbps VS h264 at 60mbps for the previous Phantoms and Inspire. This alone is remarkable. The h265 codec can store 3-4 times more data than the h264. So far very few camera do h265.
Then the mechanical shutter ! No more jello and rolling shutter. Again who does that in the pro world below $6k ?
Last, the 4K60, not even the latest GoPro has it. The future GH5 will do 4k60.

That’s very innovative for me, especially for a $1500 drone packed with technology.

      Beware : 60Fps 4K “only” in H.264 (@ 100Mbps) and not in H.265. It’s a pitty that 120fps still be in 720p.

I highly doubt that the mechanical shutter is used in video, it’s most likely used for stills only.

      • Reply nzswedespeed November 16, 2016 at 11:51 am

I agree – I actually hope it isn’t as at 24-60fps this just seems like something that’s going to break asap..? For still it sounds great though

      • Reply Oliver November 16, 2016 at 11:51 am

Seems strange to me as well but it’s what the specs say. As usual, we’ll wait for the first independent reviews.

not true the $500 samsung nx500 also does 4k h265 and the moebius m2 $90 action cam also does 1080p h265

Here’s the problem with the Inspire 2: if you own Inspire Pro the x5 won’t work on the 2. If you paid 12k for the Flir camera, won’t work. You have 2 choices, x4s with no ability to change lenses or pay 6k for the x5s with RAW video that requires SSD.

    • Reply boulderghost November 16, 2016 at 11:51 am

That sounds like your problem. I didn’t pay 12k for flir yet, they will get much cheaper soon. I didn’t buy the top of the line inspire 1 either. I’ve been making 6 figures a year with a p3pro and a p4. So now I’ll sell both, buy a inspire 2 and a p4pro for back up and take the tax write-off from my income. Thats is the right way to do business with these tools. Anything else is a HOBBY. Play with the cutting edge with no income and you bleed $$$. If you are making enough income to justify owning these tools then sell and upgrade. Who cares if you loose a little money, CODB.

I have a Phantom 2 that I can’t upgrade to the Phantom 4 Pro. All tech can’t be upgraded. Its annoying but true.

3,000$ for that thing is impressive.

Kinda scared by the lack of competitors tho, so far they kept the price reasonable even on high end models and I hope they won’t boost em too much.
