The $999 DJI Mavic Pro can record 4K-capable videos and is also compact enough to fold and fit in the palm of your hand.
In the last few years, since the idea of drones began to be more widely accepted and people invested in these flying robots for recreational purpose too, the aim quite evidently has been to make it smaller and more portable. DJI, makers of ‘easy-to-fly’ drones and aerial photography systems, have recently unveiled a new drone, Mavic Pro, which is so compact, that it folds and fits easily in the palm of your hand. The Mavic Pro is almost half the size and weight of DJI Phantom, its flagship drone. However, its compact form no way compromises its features and functionalities. It features sensors on the front and bottom, which provide with obstacle avoidance, subject tracking, autonomous landing, and stability indoors without GPS.
The DJI Mavic Pro drone features a 12-megapixel camera with support for Adobe DNG RAW, and shooting 4K videos at 30 frames per second and full 1080p HD at 96 frames per second. DJI claims that Mavic Pro can offer 27 minutes of battery life on a single charge and has a top speed of 40 miles per hour. Even though the Mavic Pro offers a compact form, it actually manages to bypass DJI’s larger and more popular drones, in certain aspects. The Mavic Pro comes with the ability to live stream 1080p video to services like YouTube, Periscope, and Facebook, as opposed to the 720p video that the latest Phantom drone allows. Additionally, while Phantom’s range for a live stream is limited to almost 5km, the Mavic Pro allows streaming live videos from up to about 7km.
Along with its sensors for obstacle avoidance and subject tracking, the Mavic Pro now also responds to gesture control. Basically, you could just wave at your drone to get its attention, instead of using a remote, or make a frame in front of your face to command the drone to prepare for an aerial selfie, among others. Along with the size of the drone, the Mavic Pro also comes with a shrunk down remote controller. The controller is extremely small, and sports a tiny screen for basic information like height, speed, distance and orientation of the drone. The controller also has an option for a user to clip their phones with it, to get the live camera view and advanced flight mode options.
However, what’s most interesting about the Mavic Pro is that it can be flown without a remote controller. Just like the Phantom 4, the Mavic Pro has the ability to take off, fly, return home, and land, all by a single command. By choosing the ‘tap-to-fly’ mode, the drone is able to complete a flight, automatically sensing obstacles and return at the assigned destination all by itself.
Having said that, as beautifully as the Mavic Pro functions, the drone is priced quite handsomely as well. The Mavic Pro will retail for $999, which is about Rs 66,000, and if bought without the remote control, it would cost at $749, which is close to Rs 50,000.
