Dynasty Warriors 9 Gameplay Shows Off The Series’ Long-Awaited Open World

In Dynasty Warriors 9, Cao Cao and his many warlords in arms suddenly have more lands to conquer. Not since Dynasty Warriors 2–when the franchise transitioned from a 1-on-1 fighting game to a more expansive hack-and-slasher–has the mainline series seen this huge of a design shift. Finally, Dynasty Warriors goes open world and we have footage to showcase the expansiveness of this latest version of medieval China from Koei Tecmo’s long running series. The developer/publisher also used this opportunity to overhaul the combat mechanics which is on full display in this clip.

Producer Akihiro Suzuki manned the controls for some of this video. Suzuki also mentioned that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as a personal influence when developing this Musou sequel.

Fans have been waiting for an open Dynasty Warriors for a long time and Dynasty Warriors 9 has the potential to open the doors for other massive free roaming Musou games. If this game offers a glimpse of the next Samurai Warriors or Hyrule Warriors, you can expect a ton of quest-style goals to choose from in a given moment. That’s partly because this game will use the entirety of China from this time period. And despite this drastic design change, Dynasty Warriors 9 will not dial down the series’ robust roster of playable characters.

Dynasty Warriors 9 will release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC (Steam) on February 13.
