Facebook, Messenger and Instagram rolls out for Windows 10

Facebook has finally started to roll out Windows 10 apps for Facebook, Messenger and Instagram. Facebook and Messenger are being rolled out for the desktop OS whereas Instagram is coming to Windows 10 mobile. According to Facebook, the apps come with all the features equivalent to Android and iOS versions, and also make most of the Windows 10′s UI elements.

The Facebook app for Windows 10 uses Live Tiles to show the latest updates from your friends and Pages on the home screen. The app comes with a File Explorer that allows you to share pictures to the social networking site through other apps. There’s also support for desktop notifications. The Windows 10 version comes with all the new features of Facebook such as Reactions, ability to post stickers in comments, trending topics and in-app browser for opening links within the applications.

The app is about 107MB in size and can be installed on up to ten Windows 10 devices through your account. It is already available on the Windows app store. We briefly used the Facebook app on a Windows 10 desktop, and it looks quite good, with a neat UI and fluid loading. However, for messaging, you will have to download the Messenger application separately or you can visit messenger.com.

The Messenger app is about 80MB in size and is also available on the Windows app store. Messenger for Windows 10 desktop has all the latest features such as the stickers, group conversation and GIFs. Facebook has included desktop notifications support for Messenger as well along with support for Live Tiles.

Facebook has also pushed Instagram out of beta for Windows 10. While the app is said to be faster now, it comes with features such as Instagram Direct, Explore and video.

The addition is of the three most popular applications will be a huge push to Windows 10 platform. While Microsoft has remained on top with the Windows 10 desktop version, the mobile operating system hasn’t really taken off. One of the major hurdle for the wider adoption of Windows 10 mobile has been availability of third party apps, especially popular ones like YouTube, Twitter and Instagram. With Facebook joining the Windows 10 bandwagon, it remains to be seen if others follow suit. However, with almost negligible smartphone market share, we won’t be holding our collective breaths for that to happen.
