First photos from the Apple iPhone 7 Plus are here and they look amazing

Sports Illustrated tests out the iPhone 7 Plus’ dual-camera setup during the Titan-Vikings game.

Apple last week launched its next generation smartphones, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. While the iPhone 7 series looks similar to the last year’s iPhone 6s series, but comes with a slew of new features and updates, ranging from a faster processor, wireless AirPods to better battery back up. One of the most notable updates has come to the iPhone 7 Plus’ camera capabilities. The smartphone comes with a dual-camera set up two 12-megapixel cameras, one with a 28mm wide-angle lens and the other with a 56mm telephoto lens. Apple at its launch event did show off a few sample images taken by the iPhone 7 Plus. The company talked in length how the dual-camera works, and even promised an update in coming weeks that will allow users to achieve DSLR-like Bokeh effect. The new iPhones go on sale in the US on September 16. Ahead of the sale, we already have some camera shots taken by the much hyped dual-camera of the iPhone 7 Plus. Sports Illustrated photographer David E Klutho took some photos with the new iPhone 7 Plus camera at the Titans-Vikings game.

These photos were taken before, during and after the match. Given the fact that the game was played in bright sunlight, it was a good test for the iPhone 7 Plus’ camera. The range of photos includes the players singing the national anthem, preparing for the game and getting indulged in it. We also have a host of US Marine officers in uniform and Billy Ray Cyrus singing the US national anthem.

The images look quite impressive with rich colors and appropriate depth and details. Considering it was an afternoon with overhead sun, the images came out very well. My favorite shot was of a person flying down with a parachute holding the US national flag, creating a beautiful silhouette. Another photo that is worth noticing is the still from when players in motion. Despite a fast moving subject, the camera did take a very clear shot. Here are some of the best photos from the lot.

There’s a lot of excitement as well as apprehensions about the dual-camera setup on the iPhone 7 Plus. Though dual-camera setup is not a new concept, but with Apple embracing it, the technology will soon become mainstream sooner or later. As mentioned earlier, the dual-camera setup on the iPhone 7 Plus includes two 12-megapixel cameras, one with a 28mm wide-angle lens and the other with a 56mm telephoto lens. The camera is equipped with a quad-LED True Tone flash, f/1.8 aperture, optical image stabilization (OIS), RAW image and 4K video recording.

Apple has included optical zoom up to 2X, which is a rarity in the smartphones. It also comes with 10x digital zoom. Apple will soon roll out a new update for the camera app that will allow users to take images with bokeh effect in real time. With another new feature called ‘Depth’ combined with machine learning, the iPhone 7 Plus’ camera will be able to recognize a person’s face, do a depth-map of their position and then blur the background to create a DSLR-like portrait shot with bokeh effect.
