More than television, there was a lot of buzz online during today’s Oscars 2016. Despite being an early morning, Indians were glued to the Internet to follow live updates.
Hollywood today celebrated one of its biggest nights with the 88th iteration of the Academy Awards. Among the highlights were Leonardo DiCaprio finally winning his first Oscar for The Revenant, and Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra making an appearance at the Awards. It’s not just the fans in US or UK, but Indians too were up early to follow the live updates, and Google has revealed some numbers to show just how the Oscars unfolded online.
Google has revealed that Oscar-related searches had seen a 70 percent growth compared to last year. It wasn’t just the people in the US or UK that were glued to the Awards, and India too features in the top-10 list of countries that saw the most number of Oscar-related searches. US led with about 50 percent of the searches, followed by the likes of UK, Canada, Australia, and India too made the list with a two percent contribution.
For Indians, Leonardo DiCaprio, unsurprisingly was one of the most searched for actors followed by Matt Damon. Other top searches included The Revenant, Mad Max: Fury Road, Cate Blanchett, and Jennifer Lawrence, among others. Other searched for terms included Red Carpet Dresses of actors like Olivia Wilde, Priyanka Chopra, and Jennifer Lawrence among others.

Twitter too revealed a few trends, and not surprisingly, DiCaprio’s win generated the most amount of traffic on the micro blogging platform. Twitter reveals that the announcement generated more than 440,000 tweets per minute globally, which broke the previous record of 225,000 tweets a minute held by Ellen DeGeneres’ star-studded selfie.
Besides all the live updates and behind-the-scenes clips, other moments creating a buzz on Twitter included Spotlight winning the Best Picture award, and Mad Max: Fury Road winning its sixth Academy Award.
