Future Samsung smartwatches to beam an interactive display on users’ hands

Tired of squinting at your smartwatch’s tiny display? Samsung may have a solution.

A smartwatch’s tiny display can be a nightmare for people with weak eyesight or large thumbs. But Samsung seems to have found a solution for this issue. A patent filed by the South Korean company shows a smartwatch that can project a virtual user interface on the wearer’s arm. Along with a bigger display to look at, the patent also shows that the projected display will be interactive.

The patent details how this feature will work. The smartwatch will essentially scan the wearer’s arm or for that matter any object in one’s surrounding. Once scanned, the smartwatch will then beam the virtual user interface on that surface. It can not only beam something on the users’ hands, but will also beam a full-size display on a surface.

The diagrams show the smartwatch beaming a dialpad or a sketchpad on the user’s hand. Since they are interactive, a user can simply tap on these numbers or draw something on his wrist and it will reflect on the smartwatch. Another scenario shows a map on the smartwatch, but the turn-by-turn instructions is displayed on the user’s hand.

This new tech is quite futuristic and, to be honest, very James Bond-like. But we need to bear in mind that it is only a patent for now. These patents basically serve the purpose of protecting ideas from being stolen by rivals. In other words, there is no guarantee that Samsung will launch this sort of smartwatch any time soon for you to buy.

That said, Samsung isn’t the only one keen on using the user’s hands to expand a smartwatch’s capabilities. Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University has developed a new wearable technology called ‘SkinTrack’ that can turn the entire lower arm into a touchpad. This system tracks touch input on the user’s hands and arms, and can also detect touches at discrete locations on the skin, enabling functionality similar to buttons or slider controls.
