Galaxy S7 vs iPhone 6s: 5 things Samsung’s flagship smartphones can do, that Apple’s iPhones can’t

Samsung has finally unveiled its 2016 flagships, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge which will take on Apple’s iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. Here are 5 things that Samsung flagships can do that Apple’s iPhones can’t.

At its Galaxy Unpacked event last night, Samsung finally made its Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge official. Both smartphones come with top of the line hardware along with some highly anticipated features that were missing from last year’s flagships. Design wise, there isn’t much of a change compared to Galaxy S6-family, and except for a more curvier front and back glass, most changes are under the hood.

The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge feature a 5.1-inch and 5.5-inch QHD display. Both smartphones are powered either by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 or Exynos 8890 64-bit processor, paired with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage. Samsung has also equipped new 12-megapixel camera module with aperture f/1.7, which it claims to offer better low light photography.

Both smartphones run on Google’s latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS wrapped under TouchWiz UI. One of the immediate competitors for the Galaxy S7-family are Apple’s iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. Although both run on different hardware and platform, there are some features that you’ll only get on the Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge and not on Apple’s iPhones.

Let’s take a look at five of these features.

Always On display: While Samsung has equipped the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge with QHD, iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus sport an 4.7-inch HD (720p) and 5.5-inch Full HD (1080p) displays respectively. Apart from the resolution, one of the biggest differentiators is the Always On display on Samsung’s flagship smartphones. This lets users check notification, time and calendar events, without having to unlock the smartphone. As only a section of screen lights up, it doesn’t take a toll on the battery life, Samsung claims.

Wireless Charging / Fast Charging: Samsung’s latest smartphones also feature wireless charging feature, as well as fast charging feature, which can take the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge batteries from 0-60 percent in just 30 minutes. While this feature has been missing from the iPhones, Apple is believed to be working on ‘long distance’ wireless charging without needing a mat.

Heart Rate Sensor: As we have seen on Samsung’s earlier flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S7-family also features a heart rate sensor placed beside the camera module. There’s S-Health app too, which can keep track of daily activities such as sleep monitoring, number of steps taken, calories burned and much more. It works best with Gear series smartwatches. This features you only get on Samsung smartphones and is missing from the iPhone.

Waterproof: We’ve come across videos that show iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus submerged in water, however they are not officially waterproof. Samsung’s new smartphones, on the other hand, boast IP68 certification. In other words, you can submerge the smartphones under water up to 1.2 meters for up to 30 minutes.

Expandable memory: The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are available in 16GB 64GB and 128GB storage options. Those buying the 16GB variant often run out of storage space and there is no option to expand it further. The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge offer 32GB and 64GB storage options. But after a lot of criticism, Samsung has brought back the microSD card slot. It has opted for a hybrid setup, wherein you can either insert two SIM cards, or one SIM card and a microSD card.
