Google doodle today marks 96th birth anniversary of Sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar



Pandit Ravi Shankar was born on 7th April, 1920 in Benaras. Ravi Shankar learned sitar from Allauddin Khan who was a court musician.

Google doodle today pays tribute to Sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar on his 96th birth anniversary. Born Robindro Shaunkor Chowdhury in a Bengali family, he was often termed as Pandit for his mastery in the Hindustani classical music.

Pandit Ravi Shankar was born on 7th April, 1920 in Benaras. Ravi Shankar learned sitar from Allauddin Khan who was a court musician. Shankar worked as a composer for Satyajit Ray directed Apu Trilogy, only after finishing his studies in 1944.

Shankar played a vital role in popularising Indian classical music in Europe and America in 1960s by teaching and performing.

He was nominated for Rajya Sabha in 1986 and served till 1992. Government awarded him Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honour, in 1999.

Ravi Shankar loved the music and sitar with so much affection that he used to perform until end of his life.. Shankar breathed his last in 11 December, 2012 in San Diego, California.

Some prominent awards to Pandit Ravi Shankar includes Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1962, Padma Bhushan in 1967, Padma Vibhushan in 1981, Kalidas Samman from Madhya Pradesh government for 1987–88 and Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1992.
