Google launches flood alerts for India, available via Google Public Alerts

With its new real time flood alerts in India, Google aims to provide information about natural disasters to users. The alert service will also provide expected timeline, map and tips to stay safe.

Google has introduced a new flood alerts feature in India as a part of its efforts to make critical information around natural disasters more accessible to everyone. Available via Google Public Alerts platform, the alerts will be displayed on Google apps such as Google web search, Google Maps and Google Now cards. Clicking on the alert, users will be provided with details about hazards, expected timeline, maps and a few tips to stay safe.

Google will use data provided by the Central Water Commission (CWC), allowing users to find flood alerts along with information on river level for over 170 areas under CWC observation stations.

“We’re constantly working to improve our Google Crisis Response tools to make critical information more accessible around natural disasters. Through Public Alerts we show relevant official weather, public safety and earthquake alerts to give people the information they need to make informed decisions in times of crisis,” Google said in its blog post.

This is not the first time Google has taken such an initiative. It is already offering cyclone alerts with the help from India’s Meteorological Department and People Finder feature to find missing friends and relatives in the affected regions.

By making life-saving and critical information widely available, Google wants people to be prepared for natural disasters and protect others too, the company said in its blog post. To look for active alerts, users can visit google.org/publicalerts.
