Google has announced that it will pull plug over photo storage service Picasa starting March 15. As an alternative, Google is suggesting users to switch to Google Photos.
Earlier today, Google announced on its blog post that it will stop supporting its photo storage service Picasa in March. To begin with, Google will discontinue the Picasa desktop app on March 15, followed by Picasa web albums in May 1, after which photos and albums will no longer be editable.
“We know for many of you, a great deal of care has gone into managing your photos and videos using Picasa – including the hours you’ve invested and the most precious moments you’ve trusted us with. So we will take some time in order to do this right and provide you with options and easy ways to access your content,” head of Google Photos, Anil Sabharwal, wrote in a blog post.
As an alternative, Google is suggesting users to switch to Google Photos app. For those who have been using Picasa, all the photos and videos will be migrated to Google Photos. Users can access and modify their photos by logging using their Google account. For those who don’t want to use Google Photos, all their albums and photos will still exist on Picasa, and will be available for downloading and deletion.
Shutting down Picasa could be the right decision as it doesn’t make sense to two separate photo storage applications – the more recent Google Photos and the dated software Picasa.
