GoPro Hero launches as an entry-level camera that costs less than £200

GoPro has just announced the Hero, an entry-level, £199.99 camera that’s designed for consumers who don’t really need the most advanced features on the market.

The GoPro Hero is a lot cheaper than the other products in the firm’s lineup, with the company hoping to tempt in anyone who’s been a little intimidated by − or simply unable to afford − the company’s higher-end creations.

The new model looks a lot like the £399.99 GoPro Hero 6 Black, but leaves out 4K and slo-mo recording, with its filming capabilities instead topping out at a maximum resolution and frame rate of 1440p at 60fps.

It also features video stabilisation, a 2-inch touchscreen, voice control functionality and 10-megapixel photo capture, and it’s waterproof to depths of 10m.

“HERO is a great first GoPro for people looking to share experiences beyond what a phone can capture,” said Meghan Laffey, GoPro’s SVP of product. “HERO makes it easy to share ‘wow’ moments at a price that’s perfect for first-time users.”

GoPro is going through a tough patch at the moment, and while the Hero won’t solve all of its problems, the firm will be counting on its new creation for a quick win, which could eventually lead to healthier sales further up the chain.
