Huawei unveils the Matebook X Pro: A laptop that’s close to bezel-less

The new Matebook is a sight for sore eyes

Huawei has kicked off the MWC 2018 festivities – and slightly unexpectedly by unveiling a laptop, and three new tablets. Despite this being Mobile World Congress, there’s not a mobile phone on sight.

The Huawei Matebook X Pro is the star of the show here. A follow up to last year’s Matebook X, not only is it a bit of a powerhouse in itself, but it’s also taking us one big step closer to the first bezel-less laptop. With a frame around the screen of just 4.4mm, it really is a thing of great beauty.

Fortunately, that beauty is more than just skin deep. The Matebook X Pro is a 14in Windows 10 laptop that’s packed with an impressive set of specs for the power user. It’s available in two tiers: the powerful i5-8250U, 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD configuration; or the even more powerful i7-8550U, 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD mix. Both models come with a 3,000 x 2,000 LTPS panel and a rather neat solution to the problem of where you put a webcam when there’s no bezel: a little headlamp that pops up from the keyboard when required and can be pushed back down when not in use.

Huawei reckons that the built-in 54.7Wh battery will be sufficient to get you through the day, but should you find yourself short, the bundled USB Type-C fast charger will give you six hours more juice in just half an hour.

Then there are the tablets. Huawei has unveiled a batch of Android slates, called the MediaPad M5 series. The family comprises of one 8.4in device and a couple of 10.8in models. Each one of these comes with a Kirin 960 processor, a 2K screen and speakers tuned by Harman Kardon.

The most interesting of the 10.8in tablets is the MediaPad M5 Pro, which not only comes with a stylus in the box (“Huawei M-Pen”), but also switches to a Windows 10 S environment when docked in an optional keyboard stand. This could prove all-important to those that want the convenience of an Android tablet, but the productivity of a Windows device.
