In Depth: Nintendo NX: Everything we know about Nintendo’s new mystery console

The path to the NeXt Nintendo system

Update: The Nintendo NX will have tons of third-party support, if a recent tweet from a CEO of a Japan-based consultancy firm is to be believed. Dr. Serkan Toto tweeted, “Bandai Namco is currently developing several NX titles. Smash Bros is planned to be a launch title. I am not sure about the date – yet.” We’ll reach out to Nintendo and Bandai Namco to confirm the legitimacy of the rumor.

Original article below…

The Nintendo NX will be unlike any console the company has on the market, according to new Nintendo President Tatsumi Kmishima. In one of his first major public interviews since transitioning to President of Nintendo, Kimishima opened up about the Nintendo NX to Time’s Matt Peckham.

“As far as NX goes, I’ve said it’s different and obviously a new experience,” Kimishima said. “That being said, I can assure you we’re not building the next version of Wii or Wii U. It’s something unique and different. It’s something where we have to move away from those platforms in order to make it something that will appeal to our consumer base.”

Distilled, that means there’s going to be a new console from the house of Mario and that it’s going to come sooner rather than later.

There’s good reason for the expediency: while Sony (and to a lesser extent, Microsoft) can potentially match their earlier successes with their latest batch of consoles, the Wii U will almost definitely go down in history as Nintendo’s worst-selling console.

Just how dire is Nintendo’s need to jump ship on the Wii U? It’s currently sitting at around 10 million units sold, and even a new Legend of Zelda game won’t likely double system sales to the point where it can match the GameCube’s near 22-million sales mark, let alone the Wii’s 100 million unit high-bar.

While the big N has been tight-lipped about what the NX will bring to the market, even going so far as to say more won’t be revealed until next year, examining the successes and failures of the Wii U and exploring Nintendo’s 30 years of console-publishing history can shed light on what we’re to expect from the NX.

What we know so far:

The path to the NeXt Nintendo system

Nintendo NX

Nintendo’s greatest successes were due to the company taking its biggest risks. Its top-selling portable was the Nintendo DS, a portable console with a second, touch-enabled screen that many scoffed at before it revolutionized handheld gaming.

Likewise, the original Wii far outpaced every previous TV-tethered system, and it did so by treading its own path, eschewing the standard controls with a revolutionary motion-controlled setup that some competitors are still attempting to mimic.

If Nintendo wants to see the NX succeed it’ll need to etch these lessons into memory. Should it follow in the footsteps of the 3DS or Wii U, however, all hope may be lost.

The Nintendo 3DS originally stumbled, and Wii U has outright failed is truly differentiating themselves from their direct predecessors. Both assumed that the previous generation’s record-breaking install base wanted more of the same, so they both came with extensive backwards compatibility and names that recalled the previous generation.

The 3DS only broke out of its funk after drastically dropping its price while also debuting a new Zelda and 3D Mario game. The same might be in-store for the Wii U, though the reveal of the NX means its clock is ticking.

Nintendo NX

How will the NX be different?

For the NX, a new control method is in the works after the Wii U’s controller/touch-screen hybrid failed to inspire widespread developer support.

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata even said as much when first announcing the console, saying it will incorporate a “brand-new concept.” When you take into account the other major change Nintendo revealed during that same event (a commitment to develop smartphone games), Nintendo’s 25-year-old dual-pronged strategy of leaning on both a portable and home console could come to a close this decade. Even though the 3DS is currently Nintendo’s saving grace, developing a games-only portable device is becoming more and more of a risk in this day and age.

Ever since the release of the GameCube Nintendo has consistently had the least-powerful system on the market. Given how much stock Sony and Microsoft put into creating cutting-edge tech, that’s not likely to change. They’ve done touchscreens, they’ve done motion-controls … heck, Nintendo was doing VR two decades ago, so what’s the next possible realm to tackle?

With the NX, it’s possible Nintendo could create a console-portable hybrid. The Wii U dipped its toe in letting users take their games on the go by letting them play on a Gamepad as long as they were in proximity to a Wii U console. But if Nintendo creates an Xbox One/PS4-level system that you can take on the go, then you’re playing with power.

What does the NX need to succeed?

Nintendo NX

If I had to pick one thing? Better launch games.

The Nintendo DS was the rare exception to the rule that successful Nintendo consoles debut with an all-new Mario or Zelda game (remakes and 2D Mario retreads don’t count). Nintendo was smart to hedge its bets and shift development of Twilight Princess to both its old and new hardware, and it could do the same with the NX to maximize exposure of the next Zelda game.

Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy were amongst the highest-profile releases for their respective Nintendo consoles, and there’s no surer bet to launch a Nintendo console alongside than an all-new Mario game. If a game with a name “Super Mario Universe” debuted the same day as a new Nintendo console, the hordes of lapsed Nintendo fans could likely return to the fold.

Nintendo NX

However, Wii Sports and Wii Fit proved that Nintendo doesn’t need to (and perhaps shouldn’t) lean on a new IP to become a smash hit if new tech is impressive enough. If Nintendo creates a console-portable hybrid and can come up with a simple concept that encourages players to both take the tech on the go and tether it to a TV, a good pack-in game can offer proof to the casual crowd, while the launch day Mario or Zelda game will capture the hardcore.

Nintendo NX price will be a major factor

In addition to their unclear identities and unexciting launch slates, high initial price tags were the biggest roadblock for Nintendo’s most recent portable and home consoles.

For the NX to succeed at launch, it needs to be the cheapest video game hardware on the market, and by a large margin. Whether it’s due to creating the next control innovation or breaking tradition by selling hardware at a loss, you can rest assured Nintendo won’t bungle launch pricing for a third consecutive console.

Nintendo’s previous generation of consoles, the DS and Wii, gained traction by launching at $150 and $250 (£99.99 and £179.99) respectively, so whether it’s focused on dominating your living room or your public transportation commute, Nintendo knows where the sweet spot lays for pricing its consoles.

When will we see it?

Given Nintendo’s history of teasing, revealing and releasing consoles, a holiday 2016 release for the Nintendo NX is likely. Just look at Nintendo’s track record.

The Wii U was first teased ahead of E3 2011 and debuted in 2012. The 3DS was first announced in early 2010, a year before it came out. The DS was teased in 2003 and revealed in 2004. The Wii is the rare exception because it was teased at E3 2004, shown for the first time a year later, and released over a year after that.

Nintendo NX

We’re hoping for a big reveal just before E3 in June this year, but a massive announcement event at the world’s biggest games show wouldn’t be a bad thing either. Desperate times call for desperate measures, after all.

The continually-shrinking portable landscape has led to Nintendo’s first major third-party game development, and the Wii U’s poor sales performance has likely sped up the NX’s timeline.

The Wii U’s lifespan can’t extend another two years with the severe lack of third-party support, so it’s not unreasonable to expect this system’s lifespan to be cut off at four years. If anything, a 2016 release may finally move Nintendo out of the way of the PlayStation 5 and Next Xbox releases, truly differentiating Nintendo from the masses. And if we’ve learned anything, Nintendo does best when it separates from the pack.

everyone can play half life 2, morrowind, fable, jade empire, doom 3, halo 1 & 2, and riddick on pc. Most of the game you mentioned are not even exclusive. Most of those games you mentioned above available for pc in sites like origin, steam, gog, etc.

Can you find god of war, and ps2 metal gear solid on pc? how about shadow of the collosus?
those ps2 games alone are far better than your xbox game list above.
Thats just 3 games, i could go on and on and on all day long.

not only in term of games, feature too. Ps2 is the first to implement
motion capture camera, copied later by Micro$oft with kinect, with the
same tagline "you are the controller".

"the online counterpart was more mature and functional"??????? haha..what the hell is that even mean bro?

What I liked about NES and SNES is that they were also made for adults. Nintendo has taken the kiddy direction. Even when I was a kid I thought about how the best animated shows and games were more adult in ways, and I didn't like anything that was overly kiddy. Others would say those shows are for kids, but I noticed they put a lot of adult quality ideas in there instead of what's overly kiddy. When they made the Super Mario Brothers games, and Zelda they weren't making a kiddy cartoon, they were making a visionary videogame. Ocarina of Time was good like this too. Shigeru Miyamoto said he wanted to make a Mario game that was adult with adult writing when Gamecube was released but the game was never made. When I think of adult I'm not thinking about what PlayStation brought in there with fear and gore, I was thinking of higher quality writing where you could respect the game as an adult as not being kiddy and not being slapstick or cheesy in any way. Ico is an ok example. The programmers had a vision for the 2D games, with the limitations it was good but what vision they wanted to meet with it in their imaginations it was somewhere else. They lost that creativity in a lot of ways when they went 3D. They haven't had a serious story in a Mario game, and gamers want that with Mario and Zelda since the NES days when you wanted all of that cool stuff but they didn't have the technology so you just use your imagination. That imagination sales if it's tapped into. That was the hope of the gamers for the next generations but a lot of the games in 3D are stale and lack that when they go for adult writing but it's still not that high of quality of writing while it's not kiddy. Super Mario 3D World was really good for different reasons, and Nintendo can have multiple releases of an adult quality game of the franchise while also having the other game release along the lines of Super Mario 3D World because it takes a lot of time to put together a game with the other idea. It took them a long time to make Ocarina of Time with a new game engine, and anything like that takes years. They can make multiple game projects of the same franchise to evade the problems of losing money on it. I haven't seen a platform Mario game compete since Super Mario 64. Super Mario 3D World was good in other ways but the gameplay mechanics weren't as advanced as Super Mario 64. Super Mario 64 lacked a story. Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario were really good, and from what I saw the other Mario RPGs don't compare. A serious Captain N: The Gamemaster videogame would be really good with multiple game playing and story elements with all of the classic NES characters. It can be more than one player, and he can use Gameboy in different ways. Captain N: The Gamemaster is the missing link to Nintendo games. Looking back Metroid Prime was really good, but I didn't care for the sequels. Metroid and Super Metroid were good, and Metroid Prime was the ideal 3D game of Metroid. The challenge of Nintendo with Captain N is that they're mixing in so many gameplay and story elements it can help them to create new directions in their Nintendo games. It's not just a throw it together slapstick party game like Super Smash Brothers. Super Smash Brothers is popular but for different reasons and it's fun, I personally only liked the original N64 version of Super Smash Brothers.

barely anyone had a gaming pc? says who? pc gaming was as popular as now back there. Dont made up thing dude! gosh!
And who the hell considered having a console a bad thing? you sure have a reading comprehension problem here.

i know you are not arguing that ps2 is bad, i know. God of war is not shit. Its gameplay is far superior than halo. Gow maybe only offered singleplayer, but the gameplay is more appealing than halo. If you want a boring and repetitive game, go play Halo, all you can do there is shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, and throwing grenade at the same alien over, and over, and over, and over again.

I mentioned steam and origin to point out that your list of xbox games are available on pc LEGALLY, not via illegal unofficial PIRACY such as EMULATOR. gosh, you sure take your reading comprehension problem to the next level.

i bring the eyetoy to strenghten my point that ps2 is better overall compared to xbox, be it in term of games, or FEATURE (PERIPHERAL). gosh!

gosh, i need detail of those "mature", "developed", and "refined" thing.

gta is better for xbox? really? gta 3 and SA coming first on PS2. And the graphical difference is not that big either.

It could be said that Nintendo never had the most powerful console for any but one generation. Sega Master system had greater capabilities than the NES. SNES was already outmatched by the Neo Geo when it was released.

Nintendo should hire me as a consultant. I could have told them the wii was going to be a hit and the wii u a big failure. It's really quite easy to see where their strengths are and where they've been going wrong. First off, they seem to overthink the damn controller every single generation. Their mobile gaming success largely has to with the gradual evolution of their hardware rather than revamping it everytime like they've done since about the snes. That said, the wii u controller is a joke and they should definitely not build on that clunky atrocity.

If I were Nintendo, I'd get the jump on the VR market by being the first fully mobile VR gaming machine. Put a camera on the front of it and make your release game an augmented reality Pokemon. They already have some augmented reality with the 3ds, they should be able to build upon that experience.

The 8th gen is officially over. Nintendo has won.

Xbox and Sony both announcing they are working on the Xbox Two and PS5 respectfully.

Of course Microsoft/Sony is going to try to release their Xbox Two as early as possible. Microsoft lost this gen. Sony's PS4 was a valiant effort, but ultimately took second. Nintendo took first by a HUGE margin — not even a close call.

Nintendo's 3ds has outsold the PS4, Xbox One, and Vita COMBINED. Collectively, Nintendo will have a joint 3DS/Wii U install base of potentially 80 million units by the end of the year. That will be more than DOUBLE the install base of the PS4/Vita and likely QUADRUPLE the install base of the Xbox One.

Xbox has lost in a major way. Overall, so did Sony. Nintendo just reported a 50% increase in 3ds sales so far this holiday over last year. Sony has also declared the Vita as being "dead" and that they too are working on the new PS5. Look for reports of both companies to release their new consoles within a year of the new Nintendo NX release.

Nintendo has officially won its second console generation in a row. Sony and Microsoft, the losers of this 8th gen, are not about to sit idly while the victor gets the first leg up on the next gen.

OH GOSH! Are you retarded? You're continuing to argue with someone who loves PS2, you're just not going to turn me into a SONY-boner fanboy like yourself.

Console titles outsell PC titles, period, especially prior to 2006. Gaming PCs in 2002 cost around $2000, whereas the Xbox cost $300. So you could have a system that played some heavy hitting PC gaming titles for quite a bit less than a gaming PC cost – and you act like that isn't a good feature. That's asinine, oh gosh.

Oh gosh, emulation isn't illegal if you own the game and dump your own BIOS! PCSX2 runs PS2 games directly from disc – how is this illegal? Do some research.

The EyeToy hardly strengthens your point, that's like saying that the Kinect strengthens the Xbox One. It doesn't, it's silly novelty shit that gets less fun the more you play. Again, name one game worth playing that anyone would put on a PS2 "best of" list.

God of War looks great, but when it comes down to it, there is very little gameplay. It's a button-mashing beat em up that doesn't require much skill, with way too much QTE. It's a good game, but it's hardly PS2's best.

As for the difference in online, did you ever play Xbox Live during those days? Everything was better. The friendlists, the VOIP, the messaging system, the network speed and latency, the software, the hardware, it was fucking Microsoft. PSN didn't even have private party chat until recently. PS3 only had private party chat when you were both in XMB because youdidn't have access to your friendslist in a lot of games. Microsoft was a leaps and bounds better online experience. You'd know if you'd played enough of each. PSN was free, which is great, though.

And yeah, every Xbox GTA game was way better thanthe PS2 counterpart. The models, shadows, lighting, textures, resolution were all better on the Xbox. I loved it on PS2 but the Xbox version was superior in every aspect other than a few load times due to the textures. In game though, the Xbox version didn't suffer from pop-in when travelling at very high speeds. If you don't agree with me, check out the expert opinion at digital foundry:

If you want a mashing button game GO PLAY HALO, you are mashing THE "shoot" button ALL THE TIME. If you want a game that require no skill, play HALO, you are only shoot and throw grenade there. QTE isnt bad, its
about how to better implement it to a game.
GoW require brain to play, it has puzzler, and good boss battle design. WHile a stupid 5

Does the portable handheld cost Nintendo nearly as much to make as their game consoles? In their next gen system they can begin to include the portable handheld with the game console. That can help sell the game consoles a lot more, and it will get both types of videogames to sell of handheld and console. The handheld it includes should have the full features of a handheld instead of a second rate ripoff, and can be taken anywhere without the console to work. It could also link up with the console and have features with the console. If it's possible the only way to get the handheld is to buy the console, but if they lose money on that then they can also offer the handheld by itself. This should be the official handheld of the next gen, and it shouldn't be a cheap ripoff, they shouldn't develop another handheld they would release awhile after the NX as the NX's handheld would be the official handheld. By having a handheld with full features with the NX that's the official next gen handheld, they can really appeal to the market. If they can make more money on both the console and the handheld by selling them only together instead of separately then they should sell them together. There shouldn't be another handheld released after the handheld included in the NX, and the handheld with the NX should be the official next gen handheld. The handheld portion can play it's own handheld games when it's not directly connected to the console, and it can also link to the console to play games of the console if someone wants the handheld experience with the best graphics. If someone wants to play the console games in handheld when they take it with them out in public but not near an electrical outlet, the system can also come with a powerful battery that can be charged to bring the console and handheld with the person so that they can play the console games with the handheld in public and away from an electrical outlet. It can also come with a TV screen that can hook up to the battery so that the person can play console games with the TV screen in public. Those extra features would probably skyrocket the sales for Nintendo. If they want to try new things they need to go all the way, and they can't tease with gimmicks. If it gives them 10% loss to do so initially then they should definitely do that because money will be lost on hardware. But that loss will be replaced by a lot more software being bought so it's a sacrifice that's worth making. What other company can say their console has a full fledged handheld, big rechargeable battery to play the console and handheld anywhere (if laptops can do it cheaply without much electricity cost so can this), and a portable 14 to 18 inch TV that hooks up to the battery if the person wants to play their console anywhere away from an electrical outlet with their rechargeable battery.

Barely anyone had a gaming PC when those games came out, and surely not one as affordable as the original Xbox. Since when was having a cheap console play PC games considered a bad thing?

BTW, if you didn't read what I said, I really like the PS2, I'm not arguing the superiority of the Xbox over the PS2. I was merely defending the Xbox, as it wasn't "shit.". As for your list, God of War is pretty repetitive and had so many QTE it made me want to die. MGS 2 was on the Xbox and PC. Shadow of the Colossus was great.

If you want to mention Origin and Steam as somehow relevant to the topic, I can play all of the PS2 games you mentioned via emulator, PS Vita, or other future systems.

Really? You bring up the EyeToy as an argument? The PS2's motion capture camera was a total joke, and a silly novelty as best. Can you name one game worth playing on the Eye Toy that was worth defending? I could do a much better job arguing for the PS2 than you ever could.

As for the online being more mature and functional, I'm not sure what it is you aren't getting. More mature = more developed, refined. It was leaps and bounds ahead of PS2 online. You may be too young to remember, I was a teenager playing both systems.

Which one was better for GTA? Xbox. Which was better for JRPG? PS2. Which was better for FPS? Xbox. Which had better graphics on multi-console games? Xbox. Which had the biggest library? PS2. Which was better when hacked for emulators and homebrew? Xbox. Which had the better controller? PS2. You could do this all day.

I love both systems, and I was simply saying the original Xbox wasn't shit.

    What I would have done:

Wii 2 – improve hardware for better graphics, improve the wii mote with better ergonomics, lighter, more responsive much lower latency. Continue developing sequels of past titles that make full use of wii mote 2. Fully backwards compatible with Wii games. Maintain price.

Wii 3 – improve hardware for better graphics, again focus on wii mote development, put in the best mono speaker with clear and loud audio so interaction is much better, chuck in the best sensors to improve wii mote accuracy and latency and develop wireless nunchuck. Fully backwards with Wii and Wii 2 games. Continue developing sequels of past titles that make full use of wii mote 3. Experiment with VR headseat and wii motes. Maintain price.

Nintendo had a thing going for Wii and they completely missed the plot with WiiU.

I had my ideas for virtual reality, but I would say the computer companies should come together to invest into Neurogrid chip, like the group of Facebook investors invested together to get that technology a lot cheaper. Neurogrid chip will revolutionize computers, gaming, has virtual reality, 3D hologram, and is very low watt usage. By that point videogame companies can make money on software, while the hardware is sold on office gaming multi purpose mini computers. I believe that's very realistic to get to that level of technology in 10 years, but that the multi-billion dollar top companies should create a pool to invest now. When that technology is released it can taper off to where developers can figure it out over decades, unlike how new hardware is released every few years and developers have to figure it out all over again with the huge financial loss with releasing more and more hardware. Videogame developers can make a lot more money on software, and that's for the idea of expanding those industries to a population of 4.5 billion, while right now it's from 750 million to 1.5 billion. With huge money savings there can be a lot more populations that can buy it, to where both the companies and the populations come out on top. Broadband and computers need to be expanded to 4.5 billion population from the current 750 million population to 1.5 billion population. In two decades it can reach 7.5 billion population, and in 3.5 decades it can reach 11.25 billion population. Multi-purpose mini computers save a lot on resources and energy usage.

To combat the drawbacks of aging with Shigeru Miyamoto and the other elder members they should all have Protandim of lifevantage, and liposomal co-q10 and liposomal vitamin c for lifetime. Or they can have Protandim with Symplex C of Letstalkhealth in the liposomal section, or Protandim with CAN-HELP of HealthyItems in the liposomal section. Then they would have a lot more energy to make a lot more videogames that made Nintendo so popular in the first place. I recommend everyone that's older in the industries to have those, and for everyone. Symplex C and CAN-Help are pretty much the same thing, and they both have liposomal Co-Q10 and liposomal vitamin C in them.
