Keep calm and type on: BlackBerry isn’t killing the keyboard

Fresh from announcing the end of its Classic line of phones earlier this week, BlackBerry has assured those accustomed to tactile feedback that its trademark full physical keyboard will live on.

“In response to some recent press reports, I want to be clear that BlackBerry users have nothing to fear – the keyboard is here to stay” tweeted Alex Thurber, Senior Vice President for BlackBerry Global Device Sales.

Discontinuing the BlackBerry Classic in order “to keep innovating and advancing [its] portfolio,” murmurs arose of the company ditching physical keyboards altogether to produce more conventionally-designed smartphones.

While the big rumor remains that BlackBerry is making three new Android-powered devices this year, one of the supposed designs still includes an old-school keyboard, supporting Thurber’s comments.

Additionally, currently-available devices like the BlackBerry Passport and the Priv also sport a keyboard, ensuring BlackBerry fans won’t be left stranded following the retirement of the Classic.

Am still using a q10 as my on the fly device. The q10 along with the classic is by far the fastest device on the market for quick emails, phone calls and instant messaging.

I never purchased the classic because I didn't see It as an upgrade. If it had the specs of the passport including a capacitive keyboard and was an inch taller I would have snapped it up for sure.

The classics toolbelt would only be relevant if the phone was tall. They should really give it a shot on a phablet size android device. Can't say I'm a fan of reaching to the top of a tall phone. Although when priv users start typing what they want from the home screen followed by a quick press of the enter key the universal search opens what the user wants without the need to use the touch screen. Seems like most people don't realise this and turn the universal search off.
