Kinotehnik Practilite 802 – a high output “Half panel” LED

Kinotehnik has announced the Practilite 802 bi-colour, a high output half panel LED light. The Practilite 802 has been designed to be a powerful and compact alternative to traditional 1×1 style LED panels.

Unlike 1×1 LED panels, the Practilite 802 bi-colour comes in a “Half panel” form factor and has dimensions of just 30 x 15 x 5 cm. Despite being smaller than conventional 1×1 LED panels, it still weighs in at 3.5kg (7lb). This weight is mainly due to the large heat sinks that allow the Practilite 802 to operate and run silently without the need for an inbuilt fan. Most high output 1×1 panels feature an inbuilt fan as they generate so much heat they wouldn’t work without one.

Kinotehnik claim that the Practilite 802 bi-colour is around 50% more powerful than most popular 1×1 LED panels. The company says that the Practilite 802, when measured at a distance of 1m (3.3ft), delivers 20,000 lux at a 30- degree beam (4000 lux at a 90-degree beam, fully diffused) while consuming a maximum of 90W. You may be thinking, did I just read that correctly, a 30-degree beam angle and a 90-degree beam angle? No the Practilite 802 isn’t a Fresnel fixture, instead, it uses a built-in 30-degree lens array, but it also comes with two state-of-the-art rigid diffusers, which provide efficient diffusion for beam angles of 60 and 90-\degrees.

The 20,000lx figure is impressive, but you have to remember that this is only achievable at a very narrow 30-degree beam angle. Even still, this is an incredible amount of output from a light of that size. In comparison, the Lupo Dual Colour Superpanel (40-degree beam angle) has an output of 21800lx. The Lupo Dual Colour Superpanel has a power draw of 120W, while the Kinotehnik Practilite 802 bi-colour draws just 90W. V-Mount and Gold Mount battery plates and D-Tap cables are optional accessories for the light.

The Kinotehnik Practilite 802 bi-colour features an IP54 dust and waterproof rating and you can control the colour temperature and the output of the light through a wifi app. It also features remote DMX control as well. The light is kelvin colour adjustable from 3000k to 6000k and looks to have a solid construction.

Kinotehnik aren’t strangers to making LED lights. Their Practilite Bi-Color Smart LED Fresnels that I reviewed on the site last year were some of the best lights I have tested. Kinotehnik is a small company, but they seem to understand what filmmakers want and need. The Practilite 802 bi-colour looks like a great option for ENG, documentaries, reality TV production and event videography. It’s small footprint, high output, low power draw and versatility certainly make it a compelling option if you are looking for a portable lighting solution.

The Practilite 802 bi-colour should be available to purchase in the next few months and the street price is said to be around $1,000 USD.
