Lenovo pips Apple to become no.2 smartphone brand by value in India

According to a recent IDC report, Lenovo has emerged as the second largest smartphone brand by value, and third as per volume. The credit for the same goes to the recent smartphone launches under both Motorola and Lenovo brands.

India is one of the key emerging smartphone markets globally. While manufacturers such as Apple and Samsung are fighting for the top spot in premium segments above Rs 30,000, others are focusing to cater to the entry- and mid-range segment. Now, according to IDC’s Asia Pacific Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker report for Q1 2016, Lenovo has emerged as the second largest smartphone brand in India by value, with a market share of 9.1 percent. In terms of volume, Lenovo is third largest smartphone brand in India, with a total market share of 7.7 percent.

The IDC report states that Lenovo and Moto (which is now owned by Lenovo) combined have contributed to gain the second spot by value, with Samsung maintaining top spot. With a quarter-on-quarter growth of 14.2 percent, Lenovo has pipped Apple to the third spot, followed by Micromax and Oppo taking the fourth and fifth spots. “This is a huge milestone achieved by us, which has motivated and encouraged us further to go against all odds by creating meaningful and innovative, technologically-advanced products that enhance the consumer mobile experience” said Sudhin Mathur, director-smartphones, Lenovo India.

Lenovo has seen a growth of 24.5 percent compared to last year. In the same period, the company has captured a market share of 7.7 percent by the number of units sold, whereas market growth was only 3.7 percent. The credit for Lenovo’s accomplishment goes to its recent value for money smartphones including the Vibe K5 Plus, Vibe K5, ZUK Z1 and Motorola’s line of smartphones such as the Moto G4, G4 Plus, Moto G Turbo, Moto X Play and others. Lenovo has maintained number one position online with market share of 19.18 percent, whereas offline sales have rose by five times compared to last quarter, the company mentioned in the press release.

In terms of volume, Samsung leads the race with market share of 25.1 percent, followed by Micromax with 12.9 percent. Lenovo (including Moto) stands third with market share of 7.7 percent, whereas Intex and Reliance Jio stands fourth and fifth with market shares of 7.1 percent and 6.8 percent respectively. Reliance Jio, combined with its LYF-branded smartphones and Preview Offer, have gained strong traction in retail stores in the sub-$50 (approximately Rs 3,500) segment, IDC report states.
