LG G5 to come with ‘Always On’ display, to launch on February 21

LG is all set to take wraps off the G5 on February 21, ahead of MWC 2016. A new leaked teaser reveals an ‘Always On’ display for the G5, similar to what we’ve seen on the V10.

LG has already confirmed that it will be launching its upcoming flagship, the G5 at MWC 2016 on February 21. In the run-up to the event, LG has started teasing the smartphone in bits and pieces. The company has now posted a new GIF photo on social media pointing to an ‘always on’ display, just similar to the second screen on LG’s V10. The caption reads, “Never go asleep while others do. LG G5, Always ON.”

The teaser reveals the Always On mode will display basic information such as notification alerts, time and date in black-and-white state. This means users can check out the notifications on a locked screen, without needing to going to home screen, and tapping the notification bar.

LG isn’t the only company to provide such features. It is important to point out that Motorola’s Moto X (2013) have similar solution to peek time and notifications even when the phone is asleep. Some of Nokia’s Lumia smartphones also boast Glance Notifications feature with always on display. However, this kind of implementation is mostly seen on OLED displays, where only certain parts of the display light up, thus conserving power. Samsung has also trademarked “Always on Display” for the Galaxy S7, which is likely to be an ambient screen.

LG G5 specifications and features: From the rumors so far, the LG G5 could flaunt a 5.6-inch QHD (2560×1440 pixels) display. With Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 820 chipset under the hood paired with 3GB of RAM, it could be equipped with a 2,800mAh battery.

In the photography department, the LG G5 could reportedly boast a dual-camera setup together with dual-LED flash and a laser auto-focus. Up front, an 8-megapixel front-facing selfie camera is also expected. With increasing number of new smartphones coming with fingerprint scanners, the LG G5 could also have one underneath the rear camera module. On the software front, Android 6.0 Marshmallow wrapped under LG’s custom UI is expected.
