Microsoft has sent out a firmware update for the Surface Pro 3 that it says fixes the battery life and charging issues that have plagued the device.
The release is dated November 7 and “corrects the firmware component that functions as a ‘fuel gauge’ so that the battery capacity is accurately reported,” according to the company.
Back in August, Surface Pro 3 owners began reporting a range of battery issues with the high-end hybrid, including complaints that the device was unusable unless plugged in.
It was initially thought that the problems related to a batch of the devices that shipped with Simplo batteries, although it was subsequently discovered that Surface Pro 3’s with LGC cells were also affected.
Full release notes can be found on Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3 update history page, where the company writes:
“On a limited number of Surface Pro 3 devices, an error condition occurs that causes the full charge capacity of the battery to be misreported to the operating system and device firmware. When this condition occurs, the system no longer charges the battery to its full actual capacity, and the Surface is unable to function on battery power.
“Once this fix is applied to a Surface Pro 3, the reported full charge capacity will self-correct over the next several charge and discharge cycles. Surface Pro 3 devices that previously experienced the problem can now operate on battery power, and the issue won’t occur on devices that haven’t experienced the issue.”
To install the update, simply navigate to Start > Settings > Update & security > Windows Update on your Surface Pro 3, then click Check for Updates.
You’ll then see the option to install a new System Firmware Update, dated November 7.
Microsoft notes that users should only initiate the update when plugged into AC power, and not unplug their device while the installation is in progress.
News of the update follows Microsoft’s October 2016 event, where it unveiled a new member of its Surface family, the Surface Studio.
