MIUI 8 new features detailed in teaser videos ahead of Xiaomi’s May 10 event

Xiaomi has teased new MIUI 8 features like notes, phone dialer and notification menu ahead of May 10 event.

As per rumors, there is a lot to expect from Xiaomi’s event on May 10, including the Mi Max phablet, Mi Band 2 wearable and the latest MIUI 8. In the run up to the event, Xiaomi has been teasing different aspects of its latest UI, which is not only set to get an overhauled design, but also a bunch of new features. Let’s check out what’s new in MIUI 8.

One of the first things you will notice is the design, and MIUI 8 is getting a Material Design makeover. Xiaomi is also adding some new animations to its user interface, a new way to switch between apps, and the usual bevy of security fixes. Rumors also claim that MIUI 8 could include a music streaming service, which is borne out of its content partnerships in China and its recent investment in Hungama in India.

The teaser videos show a new notes app, notification bar and an animation-heavy phone dialer. One of the videos show how a user can easily open a new note by swiping down, while a swipe up with two fingers will delete the current. The process of deleting is shown with a cool shredding animation.

The notification bar gets a new color shade and white background, which replaces the blurred effect on MIUI 7. Xiaomi says this makes reading notifications easier on the eye. All the shortcuts are now listed in a horizontal manner and you can swipe across to view them. This is something similar to what you get on LG’s UI. Unsurprisingly, dragging the notification menu up or down also gets a new set of animations.

Xiaomi has also detailed the new phone dialer menu. Besides the full screen photo of the caller the receive or cut buttons are much more prominent and slightly bob when the phone’s ringing. Cutting the call also has a cute little animation.

Besides MIUI 8, Xiaomi is also widely expected to launch the Mi Max phablet and the Mi Band 2 wearable at the May 10 event. From what we have heard so far, the Mi Max is expected to feature a 6.4-inch display, and could be powered by Xiaomi’s own Rifle SoC.

The Mi Band 2, is the successor to the Mi Band, and it was recently teased by none other than Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun. It features a LCD display and a physical button that could let users cycle between information such as number of steps taken, time, sleep monitoring and others. It could have a heart rate monitor too.
