Moto Z Play hands-on photos leaked ahead of official launch: Specifications, features

Moto Z Play hands-on photos have surfaced online, showing a design that is similar to the Moto Z. The Moto Z Play also boasts support for Moto Mods.

Lenovo launched the Moto Z and Moto Z Force smartphones back in June, and had also mentioned about a device, called Moto Z Play. As the name suggests, it will be an affordable variant of the Moto Z smartphone. While there is still no word on an official launch date, we have come across a bunch of hands-on photos that could be interpreted as a hint towards an imminent launch.

These hands-on photos were spotted on the HelloMotoHK Google+ page, which has a decent record when it comes to Motorola-related leaks. The overall design is similar to the Moto Z and Moto Z Force, and in fact there is little differentiating them. The photos also show the device running on Lenovo’s One UI, which is restricted to China. The Moto Z Play could be close to a launch in China and that could be followed by a global launch. Lenovo has already revealed that it plans to launch the Moto Z along with the Moto Mods in India by October.

Moto Z Play specifications

The smartphone was recently spotted on a benchmarking website, as well as Zauba, India’s import-export website. Based on the leaks, the Moto Z Play is expected to feature a 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED display, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625 octa-core chipset paired with Adreno 506 GPU. It is expected to be launched in two variants — 16GB variant with 2GB of RAM, and a 32GB variant with 3GB of RAM.

On the photography front, the smartphone is likely to feature a 16-megapixel rear camera, supplemented with a 5-megapixel selfie camera. The smartphone will run on Android Marshmallow 6.0.1 out-of-the-box with a promised upgrade to Android Nougat 7.0 in the future.

Moto Z Play features

The hands-on photos also show the 16-pin connector at the back of the Moto Z Play, which means that the upcoming smartphone too will support Moto Mods. These Moto Mods add a semi-modular functionality to the new smartphones, which lets you transform them into a battery powerhouse, a portable projector, portable stereo and much more. The Mods launched by Lenovo include the Incipico offGRID Power Pack, JBL Soundboost, and the InstaShare projector.

As is the case with recent Moto smartphones, Lenovo also launched the Moto Style Shells, which are basically snap-on covers to add a bit of personalization to the smartphone. These Style Shells are made using materials like real wood, genuine leather and different sorts of fabric.
