Motorola to ‘transform mobile’ on June 9, but not with the Moto Razr

Sad news folks, the iconic Moto Razr flip phone isn’t coming back.

Last week, Lenovo-owned Motorola Mobility teased the launch of new Moto smartphone on June 9. The teaser featured the iconic Moto Razr flip phone, bringing back the nostalgic memories. While the ad has already created a lot of excitement, Motorola has clarified that it is not re-launching the flip phone. Instead, the company is all set to ‘transform mobile’ on June 9.

“We love how the throwback video has been embraced and the excitement it has generated. The Razr was one of the most iconic phones ever designed and redefined how stylish a mobile phone can be. While Moto is not re-releasing the Razr, we will transform mobile again onJune 9,” Motorola representative Kathryn Hanley told Time.

Come June 9, Motorola is widely expected to launch two new Moto Z smartphones that will replace the existing Moto X line. Called Moto Z Style and Moto Z Play, the new smartphones are likely to boast some modular functionality as well. We have already seen the leaked renders of the smartphone, which shows off a mysterious connector at the back.

Just yesterday, reliable leaker @evleaks also posted a photo of ‘MotoMods,’ one of which seems like a camera mod with zoom functionality, xenon flash and physical camera shutter button. The other two look like an extended battery pack and a stereo speaker with kickstand. Moto USA has also put up a short teaser on Twitter, with a caption that reads “From brick, to flip, to snap. Snapping is the new flipping. Watch Moto transform mobile, again, June 9.”

The Moto Z Style is expected to be the higher-end version with a 5.5-inch QHD display and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 processor onboard, whereas the Moto Z Play, could be a less powerful variant boasting a 5.5-inch full HD display and powered by Snapdragon 620 SoC. With just a couple of weeks to go for June 9 launch, it will be interesting to see Motorola’s integration of swappable modular components.

Yesterday, Lenovo also announced its first yearly loss in the past six years with falling sales in its critical Chinese market. Back in 2014, Lenovo acquired Motorola Mobility from Google, the deal which is worth nearly $3 billion. While the tie-up quickly elevated Lenovo as one of world’s biggest smartphone makers, things haven’t been steady since. Lenovo said, the tie-up of both brands ‘did not meet expectations, The Verge reports.
