OPPO R9S to launch on October 19, here’s everything we know so far

OPPO R9S’ long-rumored launch date has been confirmed and all eyes will be on its 16-megapixel rear camera which will feature Sony IMX398 sensor along with dual-core focus.

Just a few days back, there was a teaser that had surfaced online hinting at a new OPPO smartphone called R9S, which is assumed to be the successor to the selfie-centric R9. Following the selfie trend, which OPPO has been riding on this year, this smartphone too will be selfie-focused like its predecessor the R9 whose main highlight was the front-facing 16-megapixel camera. The teaser spotted online hints at the OPPO R9S with the picture of a camera lens furthermore confirming our expectations. As rumored before, the OPPO R9S launch date has been revealed and the company has sent out media invites for the event which will take place on October 19 in China.

The invite sent for the OPPO R9S as reported by GSMArena, is a fancy little box which has an IMX398 Sensor inside. This means that the OPPO R9S’s camera will be based on a Sony-made IMX398 sensor. Interestingly, the IMX398 is more than the IMX300 Sony itself uses on its own high-end Xperia smartphones. In addition to this, the 16-megpixel rear camera on the OPPO R9S will also feature dual-core focus which is similar to the 12-megapxiel Samsung Galaxy S7 camera. This has been confirmed by OPPO itself as a poster published on its official Weibo page. This means that the smartphone’s camera will have a great focus as well as high chip rate and combined with a powerful sensor, one can only expect stunning pictures. Furthermore, the lens aperture is also said to be the same as the Samsung Galaxy S7, which is f/1.7.

Talking about the OPPO R9S, there was a TV commercial which aired in China recently showing two smartphones, the OPPO R9S and the OPPO R9S Plus. This could mean that the OPPO R9S Plus, the bigger variant would be launched as well with the OPPO R9S. However, the invite does not mention the OPPO R9S smartphone, so it cannot be confirmed whether it will be launched or not. The OPPO R9S was also spotted on advertising leaflets which reveals some of its specifications. Firstly, the pamphlet shows that the OPPO R9S will be powered by a 3,010mAh battery. The pamphlet further shows that the camera will be equipped with aperture f/1.7 as mentioned above. Its RAM will be 4GB and the onboard storage, 64GB. The pamphlet also shows that the OPPO R9S will come with VOOC charging feature which could be the Super VOOC charging feature, highlighted by the company this year. The OPPO R9S has already cleared TENAA and also received China’s 3C certification.

OPPO R9S specifications

Accumulating all the rumors and leaks about the OPPO R9S, we can expect the smartphone to feature a 5.5-inch HD display. Under the hood of the R9S, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625 chipset is expected to run. The smartphone will come with 4GB RAM and onboard storage of 64GB. Like its predecessor, the upcoming smartphone is also expected to come with a fingerprint scanner embedded into the home button up front. The OPPO R9S will sport a 16-megpixel rear camera which was earlier rumored to be the selfie camera and along with it a 13-megapixel selfie camera.

Another talking point of the upcoming R9S will be OPPO’s Super VOOC fast charging technology, which was introduced at Mobile World Congress (MWC) earlier this year. The Super VOOC fast charging technology charges a smartphone from five to 100 percent in just 15 minutes. OPPO had even demonstrated it by charging a smartphone with a 2,500mAh battery and which turned out to be successful. OPPO’s Super VOOC technology uses a low voltage 5V charger which is advantageous over existing fast charging technologies from the likes of Qualcomm and MediaTek. The VOOC charger is said to keep the smartphone cool, improve charging efficiency and also prevent any sort of battery damage.

As for the OPPO R9S Plus, there has been no word on its specifications and features. The OPPO R9S Plus could be launched another time or could differ in not just size like the R9 and R9 Plus.
