Samsung could supply dual-camera modules to LeEco, Xiaomi and Oppo

By supplying dual-camera modules to Chinese manufacturers, Samsung Electro Mechanics could be looking to reduce its dependence on the parent company.

Back in 2014, HTC introduced the One M8 equipped with dual-cameras at the back – one used to capture photos and other used as a depth sensor to add DSLR-like blur effects. Soon, a handful of other smartphones such as Lenovo Vibe S1, Huawei P9 and the LG G5, also featured dual camera setups. Rumor has it that the iPhone 7 Plus and Galaxy Note 7 could also come with a dual-camera setup. Not to be left behind, Chinese smartphone brands like Xiaomi, LeEco and Oppo are also scrambling to get dual-cameras in their upcoming smartphones.

Citing sources, Korea Herald reports that a division of Samsung will supply dual-camera modules to Oppo, LeEco and Xiaomi. Currently, Samsung Electro Mechanics supplies single camera modules to Xiaomi, and the rumored Xiaomi Mi 5s could be one of the smartphones to come equipped with the company’s dual-camera module. The smartphone is likely to be unveiled later this year.

Oppo, on the other hand, has been launching smartphones with heavy focus on camera capabilities, and the company may go for a dual-camera setup for its upcoming smartphones.

“Samsung Electro Mechanics will offer a true dual camera to the market in the second half of 2016. However, we cannot confirm to which handset vendors, at this time,” the source familiar with the development told the publication.

In 2015, Samsung Electro Mechanics depended on parent company Samsung with 61.8 percent orders. The portion is however, quite higher compared to other affiliates such as Samsung SDI and Samsung Display. Also, according to market observers, dealing with Chinese manufacturers could help Samsung Electro Mechanics to reduce its dependence on Samsung Electronics.
