Samsung Galaxy Note 7 to feature iris scanner: specifications and features leaked

An iris scanner is much more secure than a fingerprint scanner.

It’s all but confirmed that Samsung’s upcoming phablet will be called Galaxy Note 7, and not Galaxy Note 6. Based on the leaks we have come across so far, it is shaping up to be the ultimate phablet you can buy. Yesterday, leakster Evan Blass shared a retail marking of the Galaxy Note 7, and he has now shared some of the specifications and features it will boast.

Of the features Blass has mentioned, by far the most interesting is the built-in iris scanner. Samsung has been rumored to be working on an iris scanner for its smartphones since 2012. Finally it is believed to have reached the point where it can be used in a commercial device. An iris scanner offers much more security as it can recognize 266 traits, as opposed to 40 traits by the fingerprint scanner.

Blass also mentions that the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 will feature a 5.7-inch QHD (2560×1440 pixels) Super AMOLED display, and 64GB internal storage, which can be expanded using a microSD card. On the photography front, it will feature a 12-megapixel primary camera with dual-pixel technology, PDAF and a 5-megapixel selfie camera up front. It is the same combination used on the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge smartphones.

The Galaxy Note 7 will also be IP68 certified making it resistant to dust and water, and will be available in three color options — black, silver, and blue. We should mention that most of these specifications and features are in line with earlier leaks.

Speaking of which, rumors also hint at a Galaxy Note 7 edge variant with curved display and dual-camera setup. Both variants are also expected to feature a heart rate scanner, 4,000mAh battery and connectivity options like 4G LTE support, USB Type-C connector, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth and GPS. On the software front, they will surely run on the latest Android N out-of-the-box wrapped under TouchWiz UI.

While there is no official word, Samsung is believed to be hosting an Unpacked event in New York City on August 2, where it could unveil the pricing and availability details of the Galaxy Note 7.
