Samsung Galaxy S8 could have 6GB of RAM – but you might only get 4GB

Until now leakers haven’t been able to agree on whether the Samsung Galaxy S8 will have 4GB or 6GB of RAM, and it now looks like that could be because it will have both, with two different versions of the phone possibly launching.

That theory comes from a Chinese source, who posted as much to Twitter, adding that there will be 64GB and 128GB storage capacities.

It’s not clear from the tweet whether the 4GB of RAM version will only be available with 64GB of storage and the 6GB version with 128GB, but that would make sense, marking one version out as distinctly higher-end.

However, some people may not be able to get their hands on the 6GB version, as according to one of SamMobile’s sources only the 4GB/64GB version will initially be released in Europe and North America.

That’s certainly possible, as Samsung also considered launching a higher-powered Note 7 just for China, although the original Twitter tipster disagrees, saying the 6GB model will launch in other markets too.

So at the moment it’s still unclear how much RAM we’ll get in the West, but it’s looking like any hope of 8GB is dwindling.

Big screen, small bezels

And that’s not the only new Samsung Galaxy S8 leak, as schematics showing both the S8 and S8 Plus have surfaced on CNET Korea. The site notes that the Edge name will be ditched, as both models will have a curved screen, and that, as previously rumored, there will be both 5.8 and 6.2-inch versions.

However, there’s no home button and the bezels are tiny, resulting in a footprint of just 131.58 x 68.05mm for the 5.8-inch model, and 159.53 x 73.37mm for the 6.2-inch handset.

That makes the larger handset only slightly bigger overall than the 150.9 x 72.6mm Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, while the standard S8 seems to actually be smaller than the 142.4 x 69.9mm Galaxy S7 – though don’t count on that being entirely accurate, as the diagram of the S8 seems to be incorrectly labelled, showing the overall length as being identical to the screen length.

Even so, the S8 may not be much bigger than the S7, despite possibly having a far larger screen.

We can also see that the fingerprint scanner has been moved to the back, beside the camera and that the 3.5mm headphone jack is intact.

It’s worth noting that these schematics aren’t official – they’re apparently based on information from an eyewitness, so as always we’d take them with a pinch of salt. We might have to wait until the end of March to see just how accurate they are.
