Samsung Galaxy S9 may take water resistance to a whole new level

Future Samsung devices like the Galaxy S9 will not only be water resistant, but is reportedly designed to actively repel liquid off its surface.

Although the Galaxy Note 7 battery fiasco has pretty much overshadowed almost all good work done by Samsung this year, if you look back, Samsung has had a pretty decent year with the success of its Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge smartphones. It gained immense popularity among both critics and customers. However, between all the battery debacle, Samsung is apparently working on something really mind blowing. If rumors are to be believed, Samsung’s 2018 flagship smartphone, Galaxy S9, would take water resistance to an entirely new level, making the water bounce right off the device.

Samsung has recently inked a deal with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), an R&D lab that falls under the purview of the US Department of Energy. As part of the deal, Samsung is now the exclusive licensor of an advanced screen coating that is not only water resistant, but is designed to “actively repel liquid,” TechRadar reports. ORNL’s official website states, “Samsung Electronics has exclusively licensed optically clear superhydrophobic film technology from the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory to improve the performance of glass displays on smartphones, tablets and other electronic devices.”

The special transparent coating developed by ORNL repels water, carries away dust and dirt, reduces light reflection and resists fingerprints and smudges. This special coating was developed by ORNL after three years of superhydrophobic research on glass-based coatings. ORNL explains, “to be superhydrophobic, a surface must achieve a water droplet contact angle exceeding 150 degrees. ORNL’s coating has a contact angle of between 155 and 165 degrees, so water literally bounces off, taking away dust particles.” “The ORNL research team developed the superhydrophobic technology by depositing a thin glass film on a glass surface and heating the coated glass to transform the surface into two material compositions. A selective etching process produces a porous three-dimensional network of high-silica content glass that resembles microscopic coral and enables water-repellent and antireflective properties.”

This water repelling transparent coating is apt not just for smartphones, but it also holds significant potential for applications in solar panels, lenses, detectors, windows and many other products.

While details about Samsung’s 2018 flagship smartphone are scarce, we have recently heard quite a bit about next year’s Galaxy S8. The Samsung Galaxy S8 may not launch until February next year, but based on the rumors, it is set to get some major upgrades. The upcoming smartphone is expected to flaunt a 4K UHD (ultra high-definition) super AMOLED display running at a resolution of 2160×3840 pixels. While a screen like that is likely to consume a lot of battery, Samsung is also rumored to be pack the Galaxy S8 with a larger battery of 4,200mAh. Along with that, reportedly, the Galaxy S8 will feature a 30-megapixel camera, a 9-megapixel front-facing camera. On the hardware front, it could be powered by a 3.2GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and 6GB of RAM. The Galaxy S8 will also apparently feature a Corning Gorilla Glass 5.0 protection, a fingerprint scanner, an iris scanner, wireless charging, rapid charging, and a built-in mini projector.
