Should you buy LeEco Le Max at Rs 32,999 ?

As the name suggests, the Le Max is one large phone. Actually, it is a bit too large. Large enough to rule out a lot of users with smaller hands.

The growing popularity of Apple in China is forcing most of the smartphone players there to look for greener pastures. And when you hyphenate green pastures and smartphones, there is no place better than India. That latest to take the Shenzen-New Delhi direct flight is LeTv, now called LeEco given its global ambitions. The first phone from the company to be sold in India will be the Le Max.

As the name suggests, the Le Max is one large phone. Actually, it is a bit too large. Large enough to rule out a lot of users with smaller hands. At 6.33-inches it is a phablet in every sense and that shows in the 204 gram weight too. It is also a full bodied smartphone with a fingerprint scanner, a large battery and an excellent screen.

What is good?

The phone has a really good 2K screen which shines through, especially at night. There is also an excess of real estate on the screen, making the icons look small.

The overall build quality is good and the phone seems like something that can last, at least on the hardware front. Like with LG phones, the fingerprint scanner is at the back under the camera and this is a more natural place to have this security feature.

Performance will not be an issue with this phone, thanks to the Snapdragon 810 SoC and 4 GB RAM. It can handle anything from high quality streaming video to very graphic games. And thankfully the phone does not heat up much when you are pushing its limits. For those impressed by benchmarks, this phone is right up there with the top flagships of the year.

The camera is great but schizophrenic. It has one identity that is great, especially when there is good natural light. Also, the video capabilities are good thanks to the 4K abilities and extra storage on the phone.

What is not good?

Like the Qiku Q Terra, this phone has a lot of Chinese still hidden away inside the UI. So you will encounter message and alerts you can’t make head or tail out of quite often. The alter ego of the camera comes in the negatives. In low light, the camera throws up over saturated images that lack detail.

The battery is not all that great

despite the size and I found the phone dropped at least 25 percentage battery overnight, with just the Wi-Fi on and no SIM inserted. This could again be a software quirk. And yes, this phone has a USB-C port for charging, though the actual charging cable is USB. Please invest in a USB-C charging cable when you buy this phone.

Should you buy?

At its present right price, this phone has premium written all over it. Still, for those who want a lot of real estate on the phone and good overall performance, this might make sense.
