Sony will be hosting an event on September 1 at IFA 2016, where it is expected to launch its flagship smartphone, called Xperia XR. This would be the first device in the company’s lineup to boast USB Type-C port.

Sony has confirmed its plans to host an event on September 1 at IFA 2016. While it hasn’t revealed what smartphone it plans to launch, reports state it could be the rumored Xperia F8331. We have recently come across benchmarks of the smartphone that could be launched as the Xperia XR in September, reports Phonerader. Leaked photos hint at a metal body, and a design that is different from the usual Xperia smartphones.

The Xperia XR doesn’t look anything like the recent Xperia smartphones, and Sony seems to be finally moving on from the rectangular phones with sharp edges. Leaked photos hint at curved edges, and a speaker grille up front. On the sides are the power button, and fingerprint scanner, while at the bottom will be a USB Type-C port. This will be the first Sony smartphone to boast an USB Type-C port.

Sony Xperia XR specifications

From what we’ve gathered so far, Sony’s upcoming flagship smartphone is expected to feature a 5.1-inch full HD (1080p) display. It will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 quad-core chipset paired with 3GB of RAM. Also on offer will be a 32GB of internal storage. On the camera front, the smartphone will sport a 21-megapixel rear camera and a 12-megapixel front camera. Rumors in the past also suggest that the rear camera will sport dual-LED flash. The Xperia XR will run on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow out-of-the-box.
