Sony’s next Xperia flagship could finally boast an all-metal design

Sony launched the Xperia X, Xperia XA and Xperia X Performance back at Mobile World Congress this year, but the latest rumors suggest it will be ready to reveal some more smartphones at IFA in September too.

Photos of the phone – codenamed the Xperia F8331 – have leaked via GSMArena, showing off a design which is subtly different to that of the Xperia X and Xperia Z lines.

Gone are the rounded top and bottom, with the new Xperia handset seeing these areas flattened in a similar vein to some Lumia devices, while the sides remain curved.

It’s round the back where potentially the biggest change can be spotted though, with what looks like a brushed metal finish. If this bears true, it would be the first time Sony has embraced the premium world of metal, rather than the glass finish it has stood by since the original Xperia Z.

Sony Xperia Z6

There’s said to be a full HD screen on the front rather than the 4K screen we saw on the Xperia Z5 Premium. It’s always possible Sony will keep going with its 4K phone screen dream by launching a new Premium handset in the future, but with no QHD resolution in sight we wonder whether this new Xperia phone will actually slide in behind its current flagships.

Big changes

Both the front and rear cameras are capable of 4K video capture, which is a big change. There are still front-facing stereo speakers and the NFC sensor has moved around to the front of the phone.

That’ll mean you’ll be tapping the top of the front of your phone on a contactless payment terminal when using Android Pay.

The rumors also look like this will be the first Sony Xperia phone to feature a USB-C port. Plus the good news is the 3.5mm headphone jack looks to be here as well, so you won’t have to use Bluetooth headsets yet.

There’s a big chance this leaked photos could be fake – especially as the source can’t be confirmed – but this seems like it will be the next Sony Xperia handset.

It’s no surprise Sony is planning to launch a new series of phones either. The manufacturer launched a new iteration of the Xperia Z series every six months after the last version, until the release of the Xperia X this year.
