Surface Laptop 3 release date: Everything we know about Microsoft’s new ultraportable

Could we see a new big-screen portable laptop at Microsoft’s next launch event?

Microsoft’s 13.5in Surface Laptop 2 was a solid premium portable device, but when it came to upgrades, there wasn’t much to write home about when compared with the original model. However, if these rumours from German tech site WinFuture are to be believed, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 will bring some serious upgrades to the table with more to offer than just a larger screen size.

As rumours continue to surface (sorry), it won’t be long before we are all clued up about the new ultraportable laptop. Read on as we dish out what we know so far about the third-gen Microsoft laptop including its release date, price and potential specifications.

Surface Laptop 3: Everything we know so far

Surface Laptop 3 release date: When will it launch?

We expect to see the Surface Laptop 3 in all its glory on 2 October at Microsoft’s hardware launch event, although this has yet to be confirmed. Be sure to check back in with us for confirmation of the release date very soon.

Surface Laptop 3 price: How much will it cost?

The first-generation Surface Laptop cost only £560 back in June 2017 while the Surface Laptop 2 rose to £979 when it launched in October 2018 – in line with its major processor upgrade. Judging by its predecessors then, it wouldn’t surprise us if the third model goes on sale for just short of £1,000 to keep up with the competition.

Surface Laptop 3 design: What will it look like?

First and foremost, the leak from WinFuture suggests a larger 15in screen with a 3:2 aspect ratio. This would be the first for Microsoft and is ideal for users who find a 13.5in screen just a bit too small to work with. It is also rumoured, however, that a 13in model will be available alongside the 15in as an option to downsize.

Previously, we haven’t exactly been spoilt for choice when it comes to larger Surface laptop screens so the option on of two models will be a welcomed change. There’s the Surface Studio 2, which is bigger but not portable and also eye-wateringly expensive; or the Surface Book 2, which is light but again will set you back a fair bit.

If you’ve been considering purchasing the Surface Laptop 2 BECAUSE of its dinky screen though, don’t panic. According to WinFuture, the new version isn’t going to replace the 13.5in version but instead will be designed to complement and expand the range of Surface Laptops Microsoft can offer. It is expected that Microsoft will continue to sell the black model the same Alcantara fabric on the deck of the Surface Series.

Surface Laptop 3 features and specs: What will it be able to do?

Further rumours, fuelled by writer Brad Sams in his book ‘Beneath a Surface’, suggest that the new line of Surface laptops will be powered by AMD processors instead of Intel, despite the company’s long-standing partnership. More specifically, rumours suggest that the new laptop will use a 12-nanometre system-on-a-chip that incorporates an AMD Zen+ core and Vega graphics. AMD tends to undercut Intel on price, which gives us hope that the Surface Laptop 3 will be a little cheaper.

There’s very little else to go on, unfortunately. We hope and pray that Microsoft finally brings the USB Type-C port to the Surface Laptop range after it remained conspicuously absent from the 2018 model but otherwise, we don’t anticipate any major functionality changes. Expect SSD storage, a high-resolution touchscreen LCD and the latest edition of Windows 10.
