The Xbox One Dashboard is getting a big overhaul — here’s our first look

The Xbox One Dashboard is getting a major redesign this autumn, with some insiders able to test the forthcoming release from today.

The update aims to improve speed and personalisation across the board via a new Microsoft Fluent Design system, which offers an entirely different screen at start-up.

This includes a new Home view, which is completely customisable with the content you want to see. Whether it’s apps, games, people or anything else, it can be pinned to the Home screen for quick access.

The update for Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs also features new Content Blocks within the Home screen.

Mike Ybarra explains on the Xbox Wire blog: “These blocks will evolve over time based on the things you like to do. For example, adding a game to your Home screen may pull in an Activity Feed post from the developer, show when your friends are playing that game online, suggest your next Achievement, and provide a quick shortcut to the Game Hub for that title.”

Microsoft also says the wait between Home, Social, and My Games and Apps has been eliminated by bringing them into a single Dashboard experience.

New Guide impresses

Microsoft is also overhauling the Xbox Guide tabs in order to help gamers get to their chosen content or activity faster.

Tabs are now horizontally positioned at the top of the guide, making it easer to swipe through menus like Friends or Multiplayer using the bumper buttons.

Ybarra, the Corporate VP of Xbox Platform Engineering, adds: “The new Guide layout quickly gets you to the stuff you care about, so you never miss a moment. It’s now even easier to switch between apps or get back to Home, and the new layout will enable you to quickly jump to different tabs using the left thumbstick, d-pad, or bumpers on your controller.”

Microsoft also says it is ‘modernising’ the Community section of the Dashboard, which is now ‘laid out for mass consumption.’

It’ll allow gamers to see what their friends are up to, what developers are posting and easily browse to DVR clips; all arranged in a neat grid.

Beta testers in the Alpha ring can access the new Dashboard from today, with more insiders gaining access in the weeks to come.
