Windows 10 free upgrade ends today: Here’s how to install it for free

Final boarding call for those who haven’t upgraded their laptop or desktop computers to Windows 10 yet. Today is the last day when they can install Windows 10 for free.

It’s been exactly a year since Microsoft launched Windows 10 update for laptops, desktops and tablets. While millions of people from across the globe have already upgraded from Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 to Windows 10, there are a lot of people who still haven’t. If you don’t want to miss out on the opportunity to upgrade your computer to Windows 10 for free of charge, today is the last day to grab this opportunity. Here’s everything you need to know about how to upgrade to Windows 10 for free.

Among the people who have not yet upgraded to Windows 10, some of them maybe concerned about how the upgrade could impact on the functionality of their laptop or PC, and also the data stored on it. First things first, upgrading to Windows 10 will not affect your data. However, some programs that aren’t compatible with Windows 10 may not work after the upgrade.

After the end of today’s deadline (i.e. July 29, 2016), you will have to purchase a license to upgrade to the operating system. By upgrading to Windows 10, you will also be eligible to get a free upgrade to Windows 10 Anniversary Update, which will be rolled out on August 2.

Eligibility
To begin with, you’ll first need to find out whether or not you’re PC or laptop is eligible for Windows 10 upgrade. If you’re running genuine version of Windows 7 OS or later, you’ll be eligible for free upgrade to Windows 10. For those stick on Windows Vista, you’re out of luck. One thing to keep in mind, if your PC or laptop runs Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 Home edition, you will only be able to upgrade to Windows 10 Home. Same goes for Home Premium version too. This also means that if you’re PC is running on Windows 7 Home, you cannot upgrade to Windows 10 Home Premium. How to upgrade to Windows 10

The process to upgrade to Windows 10 is pretty simple and hassle-free. You may have noticed the Windows 10 upgrade button nagging on your taskbar every now and then. Just click on it and start the downloading.

Step One: Alternatively, you can also head over to Windows 10 download page and click on the ‘upgrade now’ button. It will download a small program, which you can save on your desktop, downloads or any other folder of your choice.

Step Two: Once the download is complete, double click on the program to run it. It will first verify if your PC meets the hardware requirements and also display the list of programs that are not compatible with Windows 10.

Step Three: Just click on start download button, which will download the required files. All you need to do is follow the on screen instructions. (Do note, the required files may weigh anywhere between 2.5GB to 4GB, and the time taken to download it will vary based on your internet speed).
