Xiaomi Mi 5 to launch today at MWC 2016; 10 things we know so far

Xiaomi Mi 5 is one of the most anticipated smartphones which is finally set to be unveiled today at MWC 2016. The event will start at 1:30PM IST and here’s everything we know about the Mi 5 so far.

The long wait is finally over as Xiaomi is hours away from unveiling its flagship smartphone, the Mi 5. While the event is set to take place at MWC 2016 in Barcelona, you can watch the Mi 5 launch live stream on YouTube at 1:30PM IST. Ahead of the official unveiling, we’ve come across leaked retail listing that sheds some light on its specifications and features. Here are 10 things we know so far.

Design – From numerous leaks and rumors that we’ve come across over the past few months, Xiaomi Mi 5 may be offered in two design variants – one in metal and the other with 2.5D curved front and back glass. A recent retail box leak also points to multiple color options such as blue, white, black and gold.

Display – The alleged Mi 5 smartphone had been put through paces on GeekBench and GFXBench benchmarks. Most rumors pointed to a 5.2-inch display with full HD (1080p) display and other one with QHD display (1440x2560pixels). However, the latest leak points to a 5.2-inch QHD display, and the other slightly larger 5.7-inch or 6-inch QHD display (most likely Mi 5 Plus).

Processor – Under the hood, the Mi 5 is powered by Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 820 quad-core processor clocked at 2.2GHz. It will also help the Mi 5 to compete with other flagships such as Samsung Galaxy S7-family and LG G5 among others.

Memory – The Mi 5 is expected to come in two storage variants, 16GB internal storage with 3GB of RAM and 64GB storage with 4GB of RAM. While it is still a little confusing, we will have to wait until Xiaomi officially unveils the Mi 5 later today.

Camera – While a leaked presentation pointed to a 26-megapixel camera of aperture f/1.6, the Xiaomi Mi 5 could likely sport a 16-megapixel rear camera with PDAF (phase detection auto focus) and dual tone LED flash. For selfie lovers, an 8-megapixel front facing camera is also expected.

Fingerprint Scanner and IR Blaster – Most flagships today come equipped with a fingerprint scanner for added security and Xiaomi doesn’t want to be left out. All Mi 5 variants will come with a fingerprint scanner embedded within the home button. From what we’ve heard so for, it will be the fastest one in a small form factor.

The Mi 5 is also likely to sport an IR Blaster on the top which will allow users to control their television sets and other audio visual equipment right from their smartphone.

Connectivity – On the connectivity front, the Mi 5 variants will come equipped with 4G LTE, dual SIM card slots, Wi-Fi 802.11ad and GPS. A USB Type-C port could also likely be in tow.

Battery – Based on the rumors the smaller variant is likely to sport 3,000mAh battery and the slightly larger variant would come equipped with a 3,600mAh battery. Both are likely to come with support for Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0.

Android OS – From what we’ve learned so far, the Mi 5 will run on MIUI 7 wrapped under Google’s Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS.

Price – As of now, there’s no information on the price, but if the recent leak is to be believed, the 16GB variant with 4GB of RAM could set you back by $499.99 (Rs 34,300 approximately), whereas the 64GB storage variant with 4GB of RAM could be priced at $599.99 (Rs 41,100 approximately).

With just an hour to go for the launch event, more details are expected soon. Are you excited? Do let us know in the comments below.
