Xiaomi Mi Max to launch on May 10; here’s everything we know so far

It’s official! The Xiaomi Mi Max will be unveiled in China on May 10.

After conducting a poll on its forums to determine a name, Xiaomi recently teased its upcoming Mi Max phablet. Continuing with its teasers, Xiaomi now reveals that the phablet will be unveiled in China on May 10. It’s all but confirmed that the upcoming phablet will flaunt a massive 6.4-inch display, and in the run up to the event, here’s a look at everything we know so far.

Xiaomi recently put up a teaser of the Mi Max, partially showing the top-left edge of the phablet peeking out of a pant pocket. One of the things to note here is the missing ‘Mi’ logo, which has been seen on nearly all Xiaomi devices. The teaser was also in line with an alleged render leaked before.

Speaking of which, the leaked render hints at a design language that is quite similar to the recently launched Xiaomi Mi 5 flagship smartphone. The phablet also appears to feature chamfered edges with metal finish, but the bezels on the side are not as thin as the Mi 5.

There’s still a bit of confusion on the placement of the fingerprint scanner though. One of the leaks hinted at the scanner placed at the back, while the other hinted at the scanner being embedded into the home button up front. That said, looking at the similarities with the Mi 5, we expect Xiaomi to opt for a placement up front.

Details about specifications and features are scarce at best. Apart from the 6.4-inch screen size, reports suggest that the Xiaomi Mi Max will boast a QHD (2560×1440 pixels) resolution display and will be powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 820 chipset. We would however advise you to take this with the proverbial pinch of salt.

Xiaomi does mention that the Mi Max will be part of a new lineup of devices that will remain separate from the Mi and Redmi series. With the launch of the Mi Max, Xiaomi will then have devices in sizes ranging from 4.7-inch to 7.9-inch.

With an alleged Qualcomm chipset onboard, we can also expect Xiaomi to bring the phablet to India soon after its unveiling at China next month. Recent reports suggest that the Mi Max could be launched with a price tag around $500 or Rs 33,000 approximately.

Besides the Mi Max, Xiaomi could also be unveiling the much-rumored Mi Band 2 at the same event. Earlier today, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun appeared to be showing off a new wearable, which is most likely the next-generation Mi Band. From what we were able to deduce, the Mi Band 2 comes with a display, a slightly bigger battery, and also a physical button, tapping on which could display the time and other tracking activities.
