Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum is a Roomba competitor, priced around $250

Xiaomi today launched the Mi Robot Vacuum. The Roomba-like vacuum cleaner can be controlled remotely by your smartphone and is priced around $250.

In line with the leak earlier this week, Xiaomi has today launched the Mi Robot Vacuum in China. As the name clearly suggests, this new smart product is Xiaomi’s take on iRobot’s Roomba series of robotic vacuum cleaners. The Mi Robot Vacuum has been launched with a price tag of 1,699 Yuan, which is approximately $250 or Rs 17,000. Xiaomi’s robotic vacuum cleaner will go on sale in China from September 6 via mi.com and the Mi Home stores.

At first glance, Xiaomi’s Mi Robot Vacuum does remind you of a Roomba, but it is completely white in color. While the color choice is consistent with many of Xiaomi’s Internet of Things (IoT) devices, we do wonder how soon the color could fade when it constantly comes in contact with dust. Moving on, the Mi Robot Vacuum boasts two technologies, called Laser Distance Sensor (LDS) and a Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). LDS has been developed by Xiaomi and it allows the vacuum to scan its surroundings 1,800 times per second in 360 degrees. SLAM, on the other hand, lets the vacuum map the layout of a room and calculate the best cleaning path. Besides these, it is equipped with 12 more sensors including ultrasonic radar sensor, cliff sensor, gyroscope and accelerometer to name a few.

The Mi Robot Vacuum also features three dedicated processors with a total of four CPU cores that do all the mapping and calculations in real time. Under the hood is a Nidec brushless DC motor which can produce up to 1800Pa air pressure. The main hover brush that does the cleaning can automatically adjust its height depending upon the terrain, and the robot is capable of maintaining a distance of one centimeter from a wall, which would allow the secondary brush on the side to clean at tight corners.

The vacuum cleaner is powered by a 5,200mAh battery that Xiaomi claims is good enough for up to 2.5 hours of usage on a single charge. The Mi Robot Vacuum is clever enough to go back to its charging dock when the battery levels are running low. Once charged, the vacuum is also capable of returning to the last cleaning location. As is the case with the smart products in Xiaomi’s Mi ecosystem, the Mi Robot Vacuum can also be controlled via the Mi Home smartphone app. You can use the app to switch the vacuum on or off remotely, track the cleaning progress, select cleaning modes as well as set cleaning schedules. While a nice addition to Xiaomi’s growing Mi ecosystem, the Mi Robot Vacuum doesn’t do a whole lot different from what iRobot’s Roombas are capable. That said, Xiaomi does has a massive price advantage over iRobot’s offerings. As is the case with Xiaomi’s Mi smart products, the Mi Robot Vacuum is unlikely to come to India any time soon. The Roombas, on the other hand, are already available in the country.
