From a massive 4,000mAh battery to Android on Steroids, here’s a look six features of the YU Yunicorn.
YU has today launched a its latest flagship smartphone, called the Yunicorn. Priced at Rs 12,999, this smartphone clearly has the likes of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 and the LeEco Le 1s in its crosshairs. YU’s focus for the Yunicorn seems to be on maintaining a fine balance between hardware and software. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the top six features of the new YU Yunicorn.
Before we delve into the features though, here’s a quick look at the specifications list first. The Yunicorn flaunts a 5.5-inch 1080p 2.5D curved glass display, and is powered by a MediaTek Helio P10 octa-core processor paired with 4GB of RAM. The smartphone also features a 13-megapixel rear camera, 5-megapixel selfie camera, 4,000mAh battery, fingerprint scanner, and connectivity options like 4G LTE support. It supports LTE and will also support VoLTE and Carrier Aggregation.
The Yunicorn is a Flipkart exclusive, and registrations for the flash sales kick off at 2:00PM today. The company has also revealed that the smartphone will be available at offline stores, but at a later time. The Rs 12,999 is an inaugural price, which will be increased to Rs 14,999 a month later. Here’s a look at the top six features of the new YU Yunicorn.
Display: Despite the relatively low price tag, the Yunicorn flaunts a full HD (1920×1080 pixels) IPS display with a 401ppi pixel density. Led by the likes of the Redmi Note 3 and the Le 1s among others, we are seeing an increasing number of devices in this range flaunting 1080p resolution displays. Adding a bit to the premium-ness of the device is a 2.5D curved glass, which is not present in other smartphones at this price range.
Power: Under the hood, the Yunicorn features a 1.8GHz MediaTek Helio P10 octa-core processor paired with Mali T860 GPU and 4GB of RAM. The Helio P10 has two quad-core clusters of Cortex A53 cores, with cores in the fast cluster clocked at 2GHz, while those in the slower cluster clocked at 1.1GHz. Combined with the Mali T860 GPU, the Helio P10 brings improvements in power management, multimedia and overall processing. YU has paired the Helio P10 with 4GB of RAM, which is the highest in this price segment.
Battery: The smartphone is backed by a 4,000mAh battery with fast charging support. YU is quite bullish about the battery and says it is good enough to last four days for casual users, and up to two days for power users. Breaking down the numbers, the company says the battery is good enough to survive 17 hours of video playback, 20 hours talktime, 100 hours of music playback and 500 hours on standby mode.
Cameras: The Yunicorn is equipped with a combination of 13-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel selfie cameras. The rear camera comes with dual-LED flash, f/2.2, PDAF support and 1080p video recording capabilities. It also comes with software features like gesture shot, Panorama, HDR, picture-in-picture mode among others. The selfie camera up front comes with f/2.0 aperture and 4P lens.
Android on Steroids: With the Yunicorn, YU has opted for a near-stock Android experience. The smartphone runs on Android Lollipop out-of-the-box, and the company has also promised a Marshmallow update in the coming weeks. YU’s new OS is called ‘Android on Steroids’ and it comes with a bunch of nifty features like a monochromatic mode to save battery, a vertical app drawer, integrated search bar and a pull-up menu similar to what we see on Apple’s iOS.
Around YU 2.0: YU introduced its services platform, Around YU, with the Yutopia. Today, with the Yunicorn, the company has introduced the Around YU 2.0 platform. Version 2.0 improves on the existing features like a deeper integration for Uber and Ola cabs, while also introducing new features. It has tied up with Lybrate, which will provide healthcare solutions including doctor consultations as well as appointments. YU is also starting its digital wallet and will also provide unlimited cloud storage to buyers.
