Moto E3 Power vs Moto G4 Play: Which budget Motorola smartphone should you buy?

Motorola yesterday launched its Moto E3 Power in India. With just a difference of Rs 1,000 compared to Moto G4 Play, we find out which smartphone makes more sense to buy.

The competition in the budget smartphone segment is getting pretty intense these days, with most manufacturers trying to pack as many features as possible. But it’s not just about the price and specifications, the design and addition of fingerprint scanner for biometric authentication among others are other points of consideration. Just yesterday, Lenovo launched a budget Moto smartphone in India called Moto E3 Power. Priced at Rs 7,999, the Moto E3 Power goes heads on with Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus and Xiaomi Redmi 3s Prime among others. However, there is also the company’s Moto G4 Play, which is priced a little higher at Rs 8,999, with identical design and specifications. For those confused in deciding which smartphone to buy, we compared both based on their price, specifications and features, and here’s how they fare.

As the name suggests, the Moto E3 Power is aimed at power users who want to get more juice from their smartphone battery. Armed with a 3,500mAh battery and fast charging support, the company says it’s good enough to run throughout the day. The Moto G4 Play, on the other hand, comes with a slightly lower capacity 2,800mAh battery, along with fast charging support. Just 15 minutes of charging can offer enough juice to both smartphones to run for up to five hours, the company says. Now, let’s look at the design, specifications and features of both smartphones.

Design: Both smartphones follow the same design language, with metal frame and removable plastic back cover. Up front, the Moto E3 Power has the selfie camera, earpiece and sensors above the display; and a strip of speaker grill below it. The Moto G4 Play also shares a similar design, sans the speaker grill below the display. Both smartphones have the textured power / sleep button on the right edge, followed by the volume rocker. The plastic back cover is removable on both smartphones, and has a textured pattern finish to offer a proper grip for holding it. Motorola has also added water repellent nano-coating, so you don’t have to worry aboutaccidental splash of water or light rains.

Display: Both smartphones feature a 5-inch IPS LCD HD (720p) display, with pixel density of 294ppi.

Processor, RAM and storage: The Moto E3 Power is equipped with MediaTek’s 64-bit MT6735p quad-core processor (four Cortex-A53 cores) clocked at 1.0GHz, paired with Mali T720 GPU and 2GB of RAM. The Moto G4 Play is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor (four Cortex-A53 cores) clocked at 1.2Ghz, paired with Adreno 306 GPU and 2GB of RAM. Both smartphones feature 16GB onboard storage and a microSD card slot for expandable storage.

Cameras: Both, the Moto E3 Power and Moto G4 Play feature an 8-megapixel rear camera with LED flash, and a 5-megapixel selfie camera.

Operating system and connectivity: Both smartphones run Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow out-of-the-box and connectivity options such as dual-SIM card slots, 4G LTE with VoLTE connectivity, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi 802.11n and GPS.

Now, if we look at both smartphones, the Moto E3 Power is not only cheaper by Rs 1,000, but also comes with a slightly larger battery and a front facing speaker. And with battery life one of the major concerns, it makes sense to go for the Moto E3 Power, rather than Moto G4 Play. However, it remains to be seen how MediaTek processor performs in real-world compared to Snapdragon on the Moto G4 Play.
